i searched but couldn't find exactly what i needed, I was wondering if i could use a system link to put the map pack on my friends xbox,

You can't get it over by system link unfortunetly. If you got XBL, the maps are free. If not, you can buy the Map Pack, or even get it in The Triple pack if you want. (It's only $50 and you get Halo 1, Halo 2, and The Map Pack). But I'm assuming most Halo fans wouldn't really need the Triple Pack.

can i still play system linked with an xbox that doesn't have the map pack? not sure if it will work with the update for melee atacks and such.

Hey you can buy the map pack by itself i picked one up like 6 months ago at gamestop for $10 used im sure its cheaper know just tell your friend to go to a resell store and pick it up. and it DL alot faster then live.
