Is Cortana The Bad Guy?
« on: February 17, 2005, 03:18:00 AM »

I was just wondering if anyone else thought this as well, only because of the last little movie after the credits of Halo 2.  The huge plant-looking thing tells her that he has questions and she will listen, and she calmly says "ok, shoot."  Considering he already knows so much about the past and everything that happened, what questions would he have for her unless she knew things that he did not.  If she did know things that he didn't, then she'd have to somehow have been there or maybe had something to do with it.  I know most people would say "then why has she helped Master Chief all this way when she could have let him destroy everything in Halo 1 by not telling him that the Oracle wasn't telling the whole story," but now we also know at the end of Halo 2 that there are several rings that can all be controlled from one remote location.  Maybe there is some greater power that no one else ever thought of that will show itself in Halo 3, that Cortana may be after.  Maybe i'm a complete idiot and just missed something in the storyline that would make all this impossible... either way, just wondering.

well she doesnt have to be anywhere to know something as shes ai... anything she plugs herself into she knows... plus the gravemind (if i rememeber the name correctly) was trying to stop the activation of the halos so helping him wouldnt exactly be a bad thing...

all in all, not a bad guy...

I agree with GCSkate... I always thought of the "grave mind" as a sort of Unifier--trying to unmask the Covenant fanaticism and re-purpose it against the activation of the rings.

Althought--we don't know his origin, do we?  If he were--say, the propegator of the flood (a sort of flood "origin of the species"), then his purposes might lie alongside that of the humans, but with a definite alterior motive (the preservation of flood).

Guess we'll just have to wait another 79 years to find out.   <_<

Its obvious that the forerunners were from earth and most likely human from the way Guilty spark calls humans reclaimers and the covenant meddlers, earth is the arc where all the rings can be remotely activated. The covenant knew this and went to earth (not knowing it to be our homeworld) to start the great journey.Any way the grave mind just wants to find his way to earth to destroy the race that imprisoned him on Halo. Now what i wonder is there a gravemind on every halo.

the charactar "gravemind"s intentions are not yet clear. it would be more believable that he wants to help to keep the covenant from activating the halo's, and becuase the weird speech he did when he had the arbie and MC (that weird brother thing). so now that the elites and humans are buddy-buddy, it would be more fit to the story if gravemind also trys and helps the cool kids (being the kids that arent in the covenant. so that consists of the elites, humans, grunts, and hunta's).

but, since the halo 2 part of the halo storyline ended so abbruptly (sp =wrong), its hard to tell what could happen.

(but yah, Cortana isnt a bad guy)

Does anyone remember when Captain Keyes was captured in Halo and then he became this huge flood blob thing? MC punch through Capt Keyes head to retrieve his chip. Anyway I reckon that the flood took ol' Capt Keyes as one of these blob things to act as a new Gravemind which would be like the brains of the flood on Alpha Halo or something. When you see Gravemind on Delta Halo he has a Prophet fused in him as well as 2401 Penitent Tangent. I mean think about Graveminds name. GRAVE mind. I think they gave him this name because he has countless victims merged inside of him since Halo's existance and because he has all these minds inside of him he is finally able to think for himself and express his feelings unlike all the other flood. I think the flood all work like Bee's from a hive and need a 'Queen' eg Gravemind or the Capt Keyes blob to think for them and tell them where to go and what to do. I dunno if that all makes sense but if I could speak over a mic and send it I would because it would make more sense lol.

Anyway I don't think Cortana is bad because like the other guys said she would know everything about whatever she is plugged into which is currently High Charity which is the holy city of the covenant thus making her able to find out EVERYTHING about their intensions and knowledge of the Halo rings. Gravemind obviously knows something that has not been revealed in the two games about either the rings, the covenant, forerunners, humans or all of the above. Who knows? Anyway I think it will all make perfect sense in Halo 3 and we will all be like "Ohh well DUH I thought it would be something like that" Lol

How could they not know it to be our homeworld?  Wouldn't they be able to tell?  Listen, they have all this advanced technology, guns that choot plasma, lasers, fuel-rod cannons, active-cloaking, ENERGY SWORDS (for God's sake, energy swords), shields, and they don't know that Earth os ours.  C'mon.  Maybe the remote location is Earth, but they have to know that we live there.

Hmm.  They only attacked Chicago, didn't they?

Yeah, in the first game, Cortana realy creeped me out. Anyway, if you have read the fall of Reach you would know that most AI's think themselves to death after a while. Even though Cortana is made specificly so this doesn't happen, but she might be going crazy instead. You may of noticed the attitude change in Halo 2.
Anyway, about Gravemind and the Flood. In Halo 2 he says he is a monument to all MC's sins. Maybe the Flood is a punishment?

Yeah well I just read the second novel and have just started First Strike. Gives you alot more insight into what is happening in the Halo universe OFF screen of the two games. ANYWAY Who knows. Maybe Gravemind is a monument to ALL of the sentient lives sins. I guess we will find out in Halo 3
