I recently bought Halo 2 and have a mod chip with xbl. I disable the chip every-time I used to connect a year ago. My question is the guy at the shop said even disabling the chip xbl can still detect it. is this true?

I play on live everyday with my chip disabled but that depend on your chip and bios. But i suggest you read the stickies in the live section.
