128 Mb Ram Upgrade...works For 1/2 A Minute
« Reply #45 on: May 07, 2004, 12:24:00 PM »

As far as being an "EXPERT" at ram, it comes down to who can and cannot do them.  Really, all three of us (lookformeb, A@ron, and I) can all do them.  I guaruntee my work.  I'm not for sure, but I bet A@ron and lookformeb do as well.  So really, it doesn't matter.  I am only a Senior in high school, so my finals only consist of about 3 tests.  I am in the middle of producing the senior video, but I have time.

I dont think A@ron and lookformeb shouldn't take the comment about me as a put down, but I have been dealing with dantok for the past 2 weeks approx. so that is more than likely why he planned on shipping it to me.

To get the record straight, although we all may have different methods on doing memory, we each get the job done, and I know I myself will guaruntee my own work.  Like A@ron said, pick who is closer or has more time.  I'm not sure how fast these other guys do it, but I am almost for certain all of us can do one in under an hour easily, so as far as speed, it really isn't an argument.

KingViper, yup I do guarantee my work for 90 days (just the ram part though Im not gonna cover things that they do to mess it up, drop solder on legs, knock off LPC resistors, etc...) I do most installs in under an hour, but I do some memory verification and testing... dont want any suprises after I ship it. It's just the fact that it was in all caps (expert that is) in his post that got me kinda miffed, I'm over it now but still I think of us as the RAM triad lol, or the ram alliance.

happy.gif. Hmm. I didn't have to send it back actually. Install was a charm. It was easy i found it. Just that i found a short behind the pins * yeah I KNOW it's a PAIN in the ASS*. And i didn't have that heat gun thing and the method to remove the rams with the iron just scares me. so i`ll just send it back to the person that provided the ram. Shouldn't be must problem since i only flooded 1 smt chip and everything else is fine.. LOL. oh well. I must say my install was not bad for a first timer. Ask KingViper when he recieves my mobo. Ask him how was my soldering work. 2 more days till he`ll receive it;)

P.S Kingviper. Take pictures of the chips i soldered!;^_^

tongue.gif I do RAM installs as well.

Anyway, with any installer here, you're getting a deal... since the actual SMT shops will do it for you for $30/chip, PLUS no guarantee since they don't normally do Xboxes.

well good luck on number 2, the only time you would need to add solder is in the event the additional ram pads are "dry". The meaning of "dry" in regards to ram installation was posted previously in the thread. What ever happened to attempt #1?

Not sure exactly what you mean by "dry" cause the stock RAM looks awful "dry"...

On some boards (it's non-version specific btw, just happens) the spots for the extra ram has no solder on the pads. These pads are flat and just tinned silver. RAM installs on "dry" pads without adding solder will not make good electrical connection and thus it will FRAO (flashing red and orange). On the other hand, "wet" pads are what we normally see. This is where the pads for the extra RAM have mounds of solder along them.

I've never paid much attention to the area before I started doing the installs, so I suppose I can see why I can overlook such a thing.  I'll keep my eye open to try to see what you are talking about...

Hmm. Yeah. About that. But i guess it's okay to add solder. If you have a good soldering iron. My chip. The only thing was bad when i flooded it. DAMN. ARGH. i`m still pissed of with that bloody video that gave me the idea to FLOOD. Geez.

yup do em over again. It shouldn't FRAO. You have the chips oriented correctly as far as pin 1 and 100 go right? They should match the ones next to them, the big and little circles.
