The paste is what I use.  When its heated it turns liquid.  I'm tellin ya...it'll work..you just gotta find the problem.  I have done upgrades before that had this problem, and Ijust went over every spot and made sure there was enough solder.  That has fixed it, along with loose pins, etc.  There are alot of possibilites.  Just DO NOT give up and try to remove them like so many people do.  You are going to end up lifting traces. Be PATIENT.

Use solder flux.  It really helps keep the solder from bridging all over.  I just add some to the tip of my soldering gun and then lightly run the tip on each pin.  If some do bridge just clean off your tip and run it on the pin..should soak up any extra solder.

You mean your soldering IRON, right?  A gun would be a hell of a mess...

I would apply the Flux (paste) to the board... there's really no reason to apply it to the iron.

smile.gif Apply some flux (weather it be paste or liquid either will work, I use liquid for soldering and paste with my smt hot air machine) to the pins. Put a very small amount of solder on the end of the tip of the iron, I mean bearly touch it with the solder! And run along each pin from chip to pad, one at a time. Add more solder to the iron as needed, the dry pads are not going to make good enough electrical contact.

Yea..soldering IRON..lol.   Wow..a gun would make a complete mess.  Fry everything.  Yea, and basically do what A@ron said, put a little on the tips of the pins, and all you want to do is add enough solder to make a nice connection...

Lol, oh i have tons of respect for you guys.  I went over each and every pin and put a nice row of solder on so there is hardly any "step" where the pin meets the pad.  Yet, I turn it on and all i get is a green light!!  I'm having a hard time believing that there is a pin loose!  I'm wondering if solder got behind the chip?  Is that possible and how would I ever figure that out!?

Ugh....getting solder from underneath a pad?  I have only had to do this once and it was from a motherboard that A@ron describes as "dry".  I had to add extra solder to the pads and got myself in a rush and ended up bridging two of the pads underneath one of the chips.  I had to actually removed 2 of the chips to find it.  Luckily, I didn't lift any pads, but I also have ALOT of practice at removing memory.  All I can say is....make removing memory your last resort.

PS Also, I still think its loose connections.  If it boots at all, it can't be a short.  I have never had a short that booted before.

well I say put it to rest for a day or two, go out get some sun. After that maybe use desoldering braid anywhere you think you've got too much solder... its all wash, rinse, repeat... and finally boot.

I doubt it is a chip issue.  I imagine you are trying it without the chip turned on... or even unplugged.

Never had a problem like that before.  I would troubleshoot it without the mod installed.  If it is flashing red\orange then that tells you there is a short.  Next step would be to basically do what A@ron said, remove any extra solder from the pins.  Too much, even if it doesn't look like it, can be a problem.

like king said if it frags orange u still have shorts ,cuz your xbox should boot without ur modchip, leave ur modchip off till u get it to boot, when u get it to boot then put ur chip back in .

A@ron

I think he is exhausted with overlooking the same Xbox which has clean soldering...

If he can't waste a week troubleshooting and simply wants his Xbox working, then I'm sure you can see the logic...

BTW, I hope so too...  wink.gif
