« on: June 11, 2006, 11:35:00 PM »

The news on the main page left out the last bit of info

Red says: were the units at e3 2.8?

Phantom Insider says: yes

Phantom Insider says: and had 2 gigs of ram

Phantom Insider says: dev kits ya know

QUOTE

He's back. The connected fish who brought us covert info on the PlayStation 3 has dug up some dirt from a phantom insider who claims the PS3 may see even more downgraded specs. From lower clock speeds to an external power brick to who-knows-what-else, one thing we know for certain is that we sure as hell won't be getting what was promised at E3 2005.

Red says: got any interesting news?
Phantom Insider says: sure
Red says: then let's start it up
Phantom Insider says: Fully functional PS3 betas still do not exist
Red says: hmm
Phantom Insider says: Despite that we have seen a number of downgrades
Red says: clock speed?
Red says: remember it was going to be 3.5 ghz?
Phantom Insider says: And now we have been told that the powersource might be an external 400 watt unit after all
Phantom Insider says: instead of internal as promised
Red says: interesting
Phantom Insider says: The current designs despite having vents all over the place apparently still cant dissipate the heat to sufficient levels
Phantom Insider says: And yields on 3.2 Gigaherz CELL processors are too low
Red says: they can't produce them in mass supply still?
Phantom Insider says: so the final release might run only at 2.8 gigaherz

Hope they don't get a "Heh, it was just a joke" tag if PS3 comes out with a 3,2GHz processor.

what im confused about is that sony said that most of the dev kits being used during E3 were final dev kits.  however there have been reports that the GPU isnt done yet (though i find it hard to believe, its an altered Gforce, shouldnt take that long) and now this.

its sad when you start to believe rumors ahead of sony.

PS3 head honchos have been saying things have been running on "dev kits" and "near-final hardware" since before the RSX chip ever went into production. Now that might be okay if you're developing on a platform with relatively known technology, so that you know exactly what to expect in a final dev kit (360's architecture somewhat similar to Apple G5's including IBM CPU, so G5's are used as dev kits. Smart.)

But when your system relies on completely unknown technology that's (lterally!) never had been in a single mass-produced device before... (Cell, BluRay...)

As said before, billion-dollar tears are coming from Sony on this one.

this was also left out and it states that the RSX is done

Red says: what have you heard about the rsx?

Red says: why would that be downgraded?

Red says: it as already somewhat weak

Phantom Insider says: RSX is finished and has been finished for quite a few months now

Red says: hmm

Phantom Insider says: we know what it can and cannot do

that is what i thougbt, the card is basically a 7800GTX configured to work with the Cell chip and running at half of the bus interface (128-bit bus vs the PC's 256-bit bus).  I find it hard to believe that it would be that hard to develop.  Also the Cell chip went into production in january which is when they realized the yeild problems they are now having.  In all honesty i wouldnt be surprised if the major components are done (Cell and RSX) and they are only waiting for the other pieces to get finalized.
