New Pc Wont Turn On
« on: October 19, 2005, 08:40:00 AM »

Hey guys smile.gif

So I've set-up the pc parts I ordered, they're all installed and in the correct positions, all have correct powercords etc going in to them.
The light on the back of the PSU is 'on' (glowing blue), but when I press the power button the computer doesn't start up.
The first time I turned the PSU on at the back the fan inside it was rotating and blowing, but now when I turn the PSU nothing is moving, the light is the only thing that is on.
I've tried disconecting/reconnecting everything, but that doesn't seem to be helping... Please give me some ideas!

I had a similar problem when I built one of m computers. I forgot to use the stand-offs when I installed the motherboard so it was shorting out on the case. I would have the little light come on but nothing would power up.

Are the jumpers on the mobo absolutely correct? check the motherboards manual online, when I built my PC i got a manual which was completely wrong.

It doesn't mention anything about the jumpers, I'll go check the web manual now!

The first time I plugged PSU in and turned it on then all the fans started turning, the power button went blue and started making sounds, then I realised that the screen wasn't plugged in - so I turned it off and plugged screen in, and now it won't turn on again.

Yes , you have to check the jumpers on the motheboard. If it still doesnt boot , remove the video card and unplug the power supply from the mobo , reset the cmos, and reinstall video card and replug psu. Then try again.

AHAHAHAHAAH. You must be new to the pc building world I assume? If you didnt use any stand offs and the mobo did come on then it would be dead after probably throwing sparks. It sounds like you dont have the power button hooked up right. Call the company or check online for a better manual. Make sure you are reading it right. Also check and make sure that the power supply is firmly into place on the mobo.

Good luck. I hope your mobo still works, and take this as experience so next time you wont forget a very small, but very much needed peice. :) When you get it up and running you will feel super leet!  B)

i had the same problem when i upgraded a board for my gf

turns out the board that was in the case before had 2 extra standoff screws and they were causing the new board to ground out and not turn on (the LED would blink and the fan would spin for half a second) took those out and it worked fine

you should the standoff screws and all the mounting hardware

Heh, yes I am new to building pcs wink.gif
I've made some progress, I took everything out and started again, this time much slower and more patient. This time it now powers on at the front, and everything comes on - I'm just not getting any video output... I'm going to go have another fiddle about, and try taking out then reinstalling the videocard, then I've got to install Windows...
Any tips?

Try another video card and see. Maybe its a problem with the card itself.

Is the ram installed? Properly? If not then it wont boot at all on some motherboards.

Is it an agp card or pci? Are you sure you have it in the right slot? Its very possible that you could have put it in the wrong slot, done many times on different mobo's

Also is the monitor good? It could be the monitor's settings. If the card is using a frequency that the monitor doesnt support like the hurts (i cant remember the letters used to abbreviate lol) it wont show up and the monitor will stay dead.

Are there any beep codes?

Good luck!

The rams definately installed properly, it's not the monitor since it works with my friends PC and Ive tried this PC on 3 monitors, and no output on them all. There are no beep codes or anything.

It's definately in the right slot, as there's oly one pci-e slot ;)

Someone suggested removing the heatsink and CPU and seeing if I can get to the bios screen since that doesn't require the CPU, I removed these two and the computer powers on exactly the same, no video output, but the fans etc go round  exactly the same, (except obviously there is no cpu fan spinning.)

Its a PCI-E card, and this particular card is powered from the motherboard, it doesn't need seperate power (its a powercoler x700 ati).

Try a pci video card (Im sure you have one of those laying around) or a friends video card. Maybe its just the video card thats DOA.

When you installed the parts in the pc , were you grounded? Did you touch components on the PCB of any of the cards? , They are sensitive to static electricity , your shirt rubbing against your pants charges electricity, and when you touch a component on a PCB you discharge the electricity in the components (in other words damaging them).
