Want To Make A Dvd Library
« on: February 21, 2005, 07:11:00 AM »

What I want to do is plain and simple.  I want to be able to put all my dvds (exact copy) on a computer  hdd and play them exactically how they are orig (menu's and all), and store the pysical dvd's somewhere safe.  No converting to avi's!!! I just want a dvd library on a "media pc".  I just dont know if this can be done yet.  Ive heard of alcohol 120, how it makes iso's and then you can mount them as virtual dvd's, is this the way to go?  or is there an easier way? I know with the xbox in the past this could not be done.  They would have to be converted to avi's in order to play.  Im not sure about a compy tho.  Any help would be apreciated.

thanks <

Yep.  Since you want DVDs in full quality assume 7GB for each one.

Let's assume the average movie buff has 500 DVDs.  That woule be 3.5Terabytes (3,500GB).  Now I have almost 2TB of hard drive storage at home, but that's just for files, etc, no DVDs. <

500 dvds? are you crazy? ive got about 150 and i thought that was alot.

anyways... shrinking them with dvd2one will make them 4.37 gigs, and retain a good majority (usually all) of the picture quality. id rip out menus though.. i mean come on.. how often you gonna use the menus on MOST dvds.? <

I would rather keep the good looking menu's and subs and just CCE method the video.

I have a dvd library about 2,256 dvd's but it's all cased and stored in my closet. I keep track of them on this program called "movie collector" to make sure I don't get another dvd over again not knowing I already had it. If you plan on keeping it on a hd don't expect any good results because they take up a lot of space and 4 200gig hard drives won't help you there.. <

You don't have to be rich. I know some people who used to work at a home bussiness..dvd-rental shop.

The employees were able to purchase dvd's used for a dollar when they were not "new releases" anymore.

If his are new, that is a diffferent story and you are right I guess. <

no no dvdshrink is not very good for compressing I mean it does the job quickly and it looks "ok" it really depends how much percent your compressing.. I recommend you read up on DVD conversion and encoding at www.doom9.org, check out the easy method of CCE, they have now 1 step set up's and much more. It takes longer to encode but you defiantly get the quality your looking for. So 2 ways looking at it, Quality over Quantity. CCE over DVDSrhink. <
