QUOTE
I edited the ump file correctly ...

?

Numerous game files contain a collection of smaller files clumped together in a large catalog.   If you insert something, changing the file's size,  the files after the insert point are no longer where the game expects them to be in the catalog.  The game does not check the file's integrity and blindly tries to load a resource from the catalog at the wrong offset.  This causes the game to crash.

What did you change and how did you change it?

Always make a backup of the original file before hex editing.

Whenver you edit any text areas, be sure to observe the CRs, and LFs (carriage returns and linefeeds/newlines) after each entry.  CRs are 0x0D in hex, LFs are 0x0A in hex.    If your changes make a text entry smaller, pad the remaining area with 0x0Ds, 0x0A pairs.

Also, do not change any zeros.   Zeros often mark the end of section, or end of a file.   Removing, or replacing them can have severe consequences.

YOu'll want to use a hex editor next time.  Notpad/Wordpad add to the file size.
