Windows Boot Problem
« on: December 26, 2004, 09:24:00 PM »

hey...ive run into a slight problem with my pc. i turned it on today and i thought everything was going good, till just after the bios bootup screen but just before windows loaded, a screen comes up telling me that "WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT. <WINDOWS ROOT>\SYSTEM32\NTOSKRNL.EXE. then it tells me to re-install a copy of the file. now i rebooted a lot of times and the same thing happened. i then tried to reinstall windows again, still didnt work. any help will be appreciated, many thanks for your time and help if possible.

Do you have Windows XP?

Throw in the install CD and boot to it.

Press R to open up the recovery console.  Copy NTOSKRNL.EXE to the appropriate spot on your HDD.

Reinstalling Windows normally fixes this problem.  A repair/upgrade install normally keeps all your programs installed to boot.

However, if your master boot record is corrupt, you may have to format your HDD.  If reinstalling Windows won't work, try going into the recovery console and using FIXBOOT and FIXMBR.

In all my years dealing with PC this sounds like a HD failing to me. I am not saying that is your problem, just that this sounds like it is happening.

1) Take the HD out and connect it to another PC and get every file that you must have off of it.

2) Run Sandra 2005 and use the HD tools.

3) If Sandra checks the HD to be good do exactly what enderandrew said to do.

This could also be a CPU issue. Is it overclocked? If so, set it back to default settings.

thanks a  lot...yeah ill try that i guess...i didnt overclock my cpu. although im leaning more towards the hard drive issue...i have 2 hard drives(using scsi) ones a 10,000 rpm drive(10gb) the other is a regular ol 20gb maxtor. windows is installed on the 10. and up untill just a month ago everything was ok. now shits going crazy and ive formatted the drive and reinstalled windows more times than i can count. ill definately try testing the one hard drive though.

Knowing that I would now be willing to bet money it is hard drive related.

Well, when Windows can't find NTOSKRNL.exe it is a HDD problem.  However, reinstalling Windows can fix this problem occassionally.

Some BIOS have IDE DPS tests on them.
