New Speaker Problems
« on: December 25, 2004, 04:03:00 PM »

I got some new speakers for Christmas, Logitech x-530, and i hooked them up and everything but i get no sound from them, nothing at all. I am using the onboard sound on my Abit NF7-S and I cant get these to work. I installed the newest drivers for my mobo and still nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

Merry Christmas!

I'm gonna assume that they're 5.1 speakers because if they're only 2speaker stereo then I don't know where the problem might be!
Is your onboard sound card one that has three plugs, line in, mic in and stereo out - but with the option to use the mic and line ports as outputs for a 5.1 system? if so then you might need to tell your drivers that you want to use them in 5.1 mode. Either use the app supplied with the drivers, or go to "sounds and audio devices" in your control panel, hit advanced on the volume (first) tab and select 5.1 speakers from the dropdown list (speaker type)

Hope this helps!

Nope, but thanks anyway. :( They are 5.1 though. Is there any way I could test the onboard sound to see if there is something wrong with that, I tried to use headphones but they don't work either.

If headphones don't work either, the onboard sound is probably fried.

My advice: buy a sound card.

Did you used to have sound from the onboard soundcard? if so then the speakers are the problem, if not then try the speakers with a different piece of equipment to see if they are at fault.

If it's definitely the mobo at fault then that's good advice!

Check in your bios in case there's an option to enable/diable the onboard sound, and make sure you do have the correct drivers installed!

I can't really advise on sound cards as I've not had to buy one for many years now, but Creative's Audigy seems to be the one that is compatible with most games (although I hope someone can confirm/deny that for you)

No this is the first time I tried to use the onboard sound. The onboard sound is enabled in the bios and I am using the correct drivers. I think I'll go out and pick up a sound card tomorrow, maybe I can get a boxing day sale on one. I'm thinking of this card here. It's $38.88cad regular at a local computer store.  Thanks for all your help.

Ok I got these working, well sort of. I opened up my case and looked around at the mobo for anything that is pluged into sound on it anywhere and checked it over and the wires for the mic and headphone inputs on the front of the case were burnt, literly burnt. So I unpluged them and checked them out, the plastic covering on the wires were burnt right off and shriveled up on the other wires beside it. I cleaned it up and taped up the wires, I left them unpluged. I powered my pc back on with my new speakers hooked up and guess what, they worked, well sort of. Now only the center channel and the sub have sound coming out of them. I just need the left and right channels hooked up somehow, they're all hooked up in the right plugs and all there's just no sound coming from them. Well I'm a lot further with this then I was about 5 hours ago. Now if anybody has any idea how to get the other speaker channels to work (left rear and front, right rear and front) I'd be happy. I'd like to get them all working for now and later on I will probably buy a sound card.

Thanks

Well if somethings been creating enough heat to melt the plastic covering your wires then maybe thats why you're not getting any sound from the other ports. Sounds like something has been shorting so it's quite possible that you're at a dead end there
I can only say keep fiddling till you get new new sound card.

That SB live 24 is an oldish board but it has 5/7.1 capability so it'll still sound sweet when you get it set up

Ok, I'm going to go out tomorrow and get a new sound card, just had a big snow storm here. I'll see if I can find anything better than that SB live 24 for around the same price.
