Networking: Internet Connection Sharing
« on: October 24, 2004, 08:37:00 PM »

this is somewhat of a double post, since i asked the same question in XBLive chat, but nobody seems to know.  anyways, i have a wireless router, and a wireless computer (802.11b).  i want to play on XBlive, Xlink, whatever by connecting my xbox to this wireless computer.  is this possible? if so, how?

the wireless computer gets internet through a USB wireless adaptor.  It also has a pci NIC not being used. i figured i could connect the xbox into that with a cross-over cable.  and thats where i am now.  turning on ICS for the wireless connection doesnt work; it wont let me do it, and it says something about the server ip already being assigned (they want a server ip of 192.168.0.1 for the computer, but thats the router ip...).

when xbox is plugged in, the computer sees it as a LAN.  i dont know jack about networking, and i tried to bridge this to the wireless network. it didnt do anything.  i just cant use internet on the computer.

so to sum it up, i have internet from cable modem going to wireless router.  computer gets internet from router. now i want to connect xbox to internet via this computer. possible??

With some work and ICS it should work fine. I would try and do it myself but my time is at a premium right now and I know this would take a few hours of work.

I will try it next weekend.

ok i figured this out, thanks.  I just had to change the router ip, and set the xbox DNS server info properly.  works like a charm.
