A Question About Sound Mods
« on: June 13, 2005, 07:26:00 AM »

Just had a quick question about sound mods. Does the sound folder for them go in the Data Files folder or the main game folder? I have been trying the data files folder and it doesn't seem to work. I have two other mods working so I know I did the hex edit right. Since the main game folder has the sound files I am thinking that might be the correct spot to put them since the readme files for the sound mods talk about overwriting some of the original sound files, but I have been looking around this forum and there is no mention of putting any files any were but in the Data Files folder. The readme files both say I should put the files in the Sound folder in Data Files, but they also talk about some of the original files being permanently replaced so I am guessing that the original sounds for the pc version are located in the Data Files/Sound folder which is different then the xbox which has them in the main folder. If anyone has an answer to this it would save me some testing time and be greatly appreciated.

Also, just out of curiosity which sound mods have you been able to get working?

Thanks for the quick response. I am trying to get either Atmospheric Sound Effects or Morrowind Sound Enhancement to work. Atmospheric Sound Effects lets me load up the game, but there doesn't seem to be anychanges. Morrowind Sound Enhancement gives me a DDE when I try to load a game. I think the sound formats are .wav.

So you are saying that if I put the sound files into the main game folder and put the ESP file in the Data Files folder the mod should work? Also, Atmospheric Sound Effects comes with an execute file to install it on the pc version. Will it make a difference that I can't install it that way?

smile.gif  I also hear it is hard on older computers so hopefully it works with the xbox's limited resources. If not I can always try Wilderness Sounds.

Sound files are kinda tricky, especially if you're running sound files that replace existing game sounds.  There are some sound files on MW Summit that "enhance" the game's sound effects.  I think one of them that works is the Forrest Wilderness sound.  The combat enhancer mod is another good one too.

Like what Nightelf said, make sure the structure of your directory (F:\Morrowind\Data Files) is well placed so that the sound files don't corrupt anything existing in your main game directory.  I downloaded the Lord of the Dragons mod and everything worked fine except for the sound.  It was kinda wierd fighting a dragon that kept throwing silent flame projectiles.  My solution was kinda silly because I transfered all the loose sound files from the Sound folder to Sound\LD.  After that it worked.

sad.gif  I know I am doing the basic process right because I got some other mods to work last night on the first try (clearer signposts, different potion icons, and different persuasion responses).

I am going to try a few more things tonight, but if I spend much more time on it my wife will probably hit me with a frying pan.  tongue.gif  If any of you ever try to get these to work and succeed could you please post exactly were you put the sound files to get them working.

I just tried a magic sound replacement last night were you just copy the wav files into the magic folder and overwrite the original wav files. There were no ESP or ESM that needed to be put into Data Files because it is just a simple file replacement. After I replaced the files I cleared my cache and loaded my game of Morrowind. I tried five different spells and there was no sound at all for them. Two or three days ago I also tried doing a larger scale sound replacement, but when I did that one many things didn’t have a sound, such as swinging a weapon or walking. That one had an ESM file so I figured it was just the same problem I was having with the extra sound mods.

I just don’t understand what the problem is. All the file replacements I am using are wave files. I even tried using a sound converter to turn them into WMA files with reduced quality and then turned them back into wav files. Nothing seems to work.

Has anyone else had this much trouble with sound files? I could understand if it was a ESP or ESM issue, but not just a simple file replacement.  I just hate unfinished projects and this one is driving me crazy.

If the files are in MP3 format i find that they usually will not work, i use a converter to make them into WAV format, which makes most mods work ok, i found that multiple mods i had would not use the sounds unless they are in WAV format (or WMA, in fact i recomend WMA more)
