Having Trouble With Hex And Cache Method
« on: April 04, 2005, 02:39:00 AM »

when i use the HEX method after opening morrowind.xbe with the xvi32 editor and then clicking on find i have Z:\ in the text string but i also have 5A 3A 20 5C in the HEX string. for some reason it wont let me erase whats in the hex string.

then when i change the Z to D it doesn't actually change it, it just moves the Z to the right one spot and puts a D where the Z was.

when i try the cache method and i try to open TESDTK, it opens for a split second and closes immeadiately. i do have java installed.

now morrowind just crashes to the dash when i try to start a new game. i'm only using the official bethesda mods.

any advice? thanks. <

I'm going to solve your problem for you by giving you a link to the idiots guide I made to hex editing. My guide is so basic that anyone can do it. All you need to do is follow the exact steps I have in my guide. Because the thing that makes muy guide different is this:
I cut uot all the un-neccessary bullshit of explaining what's going on and kept it very very explicitly basic.
Follow mine and you'll have it done the right way in a matter of 3-5 min (depending on how fast you read)
Here is the link:

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=374133

P.S. It is going to be impossible for you to screw this up. <

yeah man thats the tut i followed.

there are too many variables for a fool proof method.

a wise man once said "the best laid plans are great until the shit hits the fan".

i followed your tut step by step, but it didnt work (i didnt notice any effects). so i tried again from the begining. still didnt work so i tried something else. now i just need to figure out what is wrong so i can get back on track.

What's the very first step I told you to do in my tutorial.

Step 1: Press the insert and caps Lock Keys (This will make it easier)

doing this not only adds capitals it will also overwrite the current letter

I told you if you followed my steps exactly that you wouldn't have a problem.

But for some reason you didn't seem to follow or see the first step.
and I also said if you don't follow the steps I written excatly then you will run into problems. And that's exactly what happened.

You're right I should stop being stupid. I'll try to help you the best I can.

Just re-go over this list:

Make sure you are editing the right file.
You need the Morrowind.xbe file
NOT THE DEFAULT.XBE

Also make sure your not trying to re-edit the Morrowind.xbe you already edited before

Try pressing the insert button again.

There is either:
1. Something wrong with your insert button
2. You think you have insert on but you have actually deactivated it thinking you have activated it. I've done that and still do. Infact I just did it a while ago when I edited something else

Because If you have insert on, then it shoudn't be pushing anything to the side.

Also I just have to ask this.

Are you using the hex editor I supplied or someone elses. (I'm saying you are) but if you are using a different one than the one I supplied, then that also may be the problem.

I'm just throwing out suggestions

thanks for the help,

i'm almost certain this is what happened, because it worked correctly the first time. i just couldnt tell that the mod was in effect (but that doent mean that it wasn't). then, when i did it again (to another original copy) to double check, it began moving instead of inserting.

so i've erased what i had and i'm going to start from scratch. i'll post what happens.

Glad to be of help!

Now I just have to ask this.

Was the tutorial I made easy to follow or not? If so how simple or hard?
Could it use improvments? If so what?

Also check out this link if you haven't see this topic already for info about the mods I'm not even going to bother with.

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=378125

I'm aiming for the list to be completed in 2-3 days but I think it's going to take me a little longer than expected.  <_<
