How To: Convert Pc Saves To Xbox Goty
« on: March 25, 2005, 01:05:00 PM »

After searching all through the forums here and at xbox-saves, I saw lots of people asking if they could transfer their pc saves to the xbox and getting a variety of answers ranging from "I don't know" to "maybe" to "no way".  I was one of those people and tried for a long time to get my pc save onto my xbox.  Today I finally did it and I wanted to post about it here so other people looking for the same info in the future find a concrete answer.

First of all, here is what *I* needed to accomplish this.  It may be possible to use other methods, but this is what I used:

EvoX dash
Morrowind pc (base game, no expansions)
Morrowind xbox NTSC(original game)
Morrowind GOTY NTSC (if you want to import a save to GOTY)
hex editor
ftp program

The first step was to download a Morrowind xbox save from Xbox-Saves and then put it on your xbox.  You could use xbox saves manager to do that or just extract the zip file and ftp it over.  I then deleted the *.ess file inside the save folder (Ess is the MW save file) and copied my pc save into the save folder.

Next, go to your XSavSig folder and prep it to use with Morrowind.  Add the following info to resign.ini and save the file:

[42530001]
ID=42530001
Title=Morrowind
AuthKey=43CEAEEA15CE142AD396C448C81C6F9355BD559E
DataFile=.ess

Now go into EvoX and enter the settings menu to create a backup if you haven't already done so in the past.  FTP to your C drive on the xbox and read hdinfo.txt in the backup directory.  The info you want is on the last line where it reads XboxHDkey.

Open xbhddkey.ini in the XSavSig folder and replace the string of zeros with the string you got from hdinfo.txt.  You can copy/paste it from one to the other, but remove the spaces when putting it in xbhddkey.ini.  Save the file.

Now start XSavSig and select Morrowind from the game menu and select your pc save (*.ess) as the file to work with.  Notice the calculated signature, but DO NOT APPLY IT TO YOUR SAVE.  Morrowind stores its authkey in vv.dat, so you need to manually edit that file.

Open your favorite hex editor and open up the vv.dat from the same folder as your xbox save file.  You will now have to manually edit the hex value of the file to match the calculated signature XSavSig gave you.  Once you have changed it, save the file.

You have now sucessfully tricked your xbox into thinking that your pc save originated on your xbox hd and will be able to load it up in Morrowind.

At this point, I loaded the save and resaved immediately so I had an authentic xbox save.  Now that you have a valid xbox Morrowind save, you can import it into GOTY if you wish.

When you start up GOTY and choose Load, it will show your Morrowind saves and allow you to continue them in GOTY.  After loading the save, I again resaved to have a GOTY save.

I did this with a single pc save and it worked perfectly.  It accomplished my goal of getting my original Morrowind pc save into xbox GOTY.  I don't know if having the pc expansions installed or using the pc GOTY would make a difference or not.
