Kotor2 Help Hacking Saves Or Finding Trainer
« on: June 09, 2005, 12:16:00 PM »

I am currently running a spider chip with the EVOX dash.  Im new to modding and have little exp with this.  I have recently discovered how to FTP saves to and from my xbox wich brings me to Knights 2.  I have found some of Voxangels saves and have found some on codejunkies but what Id really like to do is be able to edit my own saves or simply run a trainer.  I am stationed in Iraq right now and my Internet use is limited and have been unsucessful in finding what im looking for.  So id appreciate any guidance from the experienced modders out there.  Ie. what program to edit my saves, where to find and how to use a trainer etc etc.  I can be reached at [email protected] or on Yahoo at [email protected].  I appreciate any help.  Thankyou.

Since I've seen your post in the trainers forum, I'll assume you have the information you need on running a trainer. As for the "edited saves"... uh, no.

There are save editors for both games, but they're severely crippled because the saves can't be properly resigned (which makes them useless).

I, for one, don't edit the saves. I edit the game files, start a game, then save it. I know of a few other people who do the same -- which is about the only way to get it done.
How the "Offical saves" from CodeJunkies are done, I couldn't tell you for certain (other than FNG having the ability to properly resign the saves). Beyond that, you won't get far messing with the saves.

Modding the game (either one) is the same as modding the PC version... with a few minor exceptions. Holowan Labs is the place to get the lowdown on that angle.

Thankyou for taking the time to respond.  Ive checked out the hollowon labs site but not much.  Im still not even sure what im looking for.  I did get two trainers working.  One ran from the evox dash, and one that is an override folder I put in the game directory.  Both have their fare share of bugs but I save often so its no problem.  On the note of editing the game itself.  I assume you are refering to the PC version.  I have spent many hours modding PC games but am new to the modded xbox and have no clue how to mod the game files for the Xbox version.  And I thought I read somwhere there was a program that resigns the saves to make them readable.  Also, I have discovered that if you use an edited gamesave, you have to remove all the original game save files before putting in the edited save game.  For some reason this worked for me.

Actually, I was referring to the xbox version. Modding either -- PC/Xbox -- is very much the same. You just need some of the game files on your PC to edit.
KotOR Tool is the program I use mostly, but I also use a program called Leto (which was created to edit NeverWinter Nights -- same file structure) for things KotOR Tool chokes on. Hell, I started with a hex editor...

You dump the edited files in your override folder, and you're off. You can also use custom scripting (if you're into that) to make endless changes in the game. Overall, the game is pretty versitile as far as mods go.

As I mentioned, I don't mess with the save files, because I just don't have the need and that approach is very limited anyway. But hey, whatever works for you is A-OK. Some people don't have the need to go all-out, they just want to make some simple changes.

Well, I must say that answered it all for me.  You rock!  I really appreciate the info.  I downloaded LETO but am not sure what files to open with it.  Ill play around with it and see what I can do.  Either that or I will edit the files I allready installed in my override folder.  I downloaded them, someone elses mods.  Im not sure where to find the KOTOR tool.  Ill try to search for that.  I really suck at hex editing so I wont even go that rout.  I would like to play with the scripting though.  Well this is all really exciting and Im going to get started messing around right now.  Thanks a million!

Holowan Labs has a stickied post that has links to all the tools and such. When using Leto, be sure to use the "Advanced Editor" (right-click the upper left corner >Tools >Advanced Editor).

It will edit the majority of files the game uses; uti (item), utp (placeable), utc (character/creature), dlg (dialog) etc. All these files are found in the .bif archives (/dataxbox).

KotOR Tool is more user-friendly (when it decides to be friendly at all) and has many other functions. Scripting will also require a compiler, which you can find at Holowan Labs as well (along with detailed instructions on how to use it -- fortunately).

If you have any other questions, you can PM me or just post them here.

Good luck.
