a friend of mine has a DC on the way and he also ordered a mod chip...even though I told him I didnt htink he needed one.

anyway, he says that you have to use the chip in oarder to play japanese games...is this true?

Would like to know because he also has a japanese version of sould calibur on the way...

since he already has a chip on the way I assume he will just go that rout..
shouldnt be to bad, I've done sever xbox modchip installs so I asssume I should be able to do this as well...
is it much harder than an xbox?

Not sure since I've never done a DC modchip install, but it's somewhere between 4 and 8 wires...

Mine works without any chip or swap disk thing for japanese games.

I modded my DC back in the day. It was pretty simple. I did it once, no retries. This was before they'd completely opened up the DC through the Utopia disc.
For reference, I've screwed up an Xbox mod afterwards. DC modding shouldn't be tough if you've got any soldering experience.
