Is everyone sure its their fan?  Mine is a 06 (MADE IN CHINA PEOPLE) and has a Samsung DVD drive.

The majority of the noise is coming from my Harddrive though.  If you put your ear right on top of the right front corner of the xbox its a screeming loud buz, nothing like my version 1.0.

I was about to take mine back before I read this topic, but now I dont want to risk getting a Philips drive.

Well, I wasn't sure if it was from the fan or not.  Going off of the fact that mine has a Sunon fan and that Sunon fans were the noise problem on the European crystal models, I sort of assumed that it was the the fan making it.

EDIT: I can use a screwdriver to prevent the fan from spinning on startup and the hard drive is whisper quiet.  These crappy Sunon fans make a horrendous noise that is amplified throughout the entire Xbox system.  Ugh!!!

Not to be relieved that you've had the same problem, but FEW!!!
I was really worried that mine had been borked during shipping or was made on a friday.

Aren't most of you swapping out the HD anyway?

sad.gif

Defective system I returned:
Mfg Date: 2004-02-05
Serial No: 18xxxxx40606
Samsung DVD
Seagate HDD
Sunon fan

System I now have:
Mfg Date: 2004-02-05
Serial No: 33xxxxx40606
Samsung DVD
Seagate HDD
Sunon fan

The loud "groan" from the Sunon fan is definitely still present.  sad.gif  Perhaps the systems with a Philips drive have the quieter fan in them...

I don't have the Halo LE box, but I was just wondering, what are the advantages of having a samsung drive, vs. a phillips?  I have a phillips and it runs everything just fine.  It runs DVD+R and DVD-R with no probs.  It's a bit slow on the CD-RWs though.  Does the Samsung run CD-Rs?  I was just wondering....thanks.

I bought 3 halo xbox's yesterday from eb. All three had phillips drives. I was so pissed. Anyways, I opened one up and modified it with a xenium chip and a 120gig drive and flashed it with 4981.06 and everything is working great.  they must be using phillips drives in most of them. Also mine was a 1.5 cuz I had to solder the extra wires for the chip to work, but other than that its just a regular xbox in a cool lookin case. Hope this answers some peoples questions.
