Need Help With A Computer Prank
« on: February 22, 2005, 06:55:00 AM »

Backstory:  My brother-in-law rents my spare bedroom.  Lately he seems to think MY computer is completely at his disposal.  I'm starting to get a bit aggrivated when I go to use it and he's on it.  When I first made him an account on it I specifically told him not to install any apps.  I guess he forgot about that conversation.  He's tried several times to install some online poker proggy...which I accidently uninstall.  rotfl.gif

Anyways, I want to sort of give him a 'virus' and see how long it takes him to tell me about it.  The only problem...I don't want it to affect my login or my wifes.  It must be limited to his name.  Is this even possible?

I think it would be great if it were someting that made the mouse move inconsistantly (fast then slow).  Something along those lines.  I want him to still be able to surf...just with a bit of difficulty.   jester.gif

Ideas???

Well i can't help you with that. But I can tell you that you could edit his permissions. Just take away his right to install anything.

That's not nearly as fun as making him think he gave me a virus.

It could be. First send him an email (anonymously) with something like 'Great Poker Tornament Players Required, Your Invite' then get him to download some stupid little app (if he doesn't know much about computers then com.exe might be enough).  Then, later that day, change his permissions so he can't install and also change his password so he can not enter his account.

When he comes to you to ask you what is going on you ask him if he has downloaded anything recently.....

Irony. My virus checking was scanning my computer whilst I was typing this and it found a virus. grr.gif  grr.gif  grr.gif  grr.gif

That's a pretty good idea.  I think I may try that.  The only problem is that I don't know what his email is.

I found a few small prank apps that mess with the mouse pointer.  I'm going to log into his account and stick it in his startup menu (rename it to something that sounds official).  I'm just curious to know if this will affect my startup though.  If so, all I have to do is hit esc and I'm back to normal.

Log in as his user account, run regedit. (remember if you do it from the run clear the history)
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MS\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Add anything you want to make start up for him(it will only run when his session is started)

If you want to realy mess with him, put every regular application you have on your system here. That way when he logs in EVERYTHING will open tongue.gif

You are my heeeero.  I'll sippy this fine malt I'm a drinkin' (Steel Reserve   ) in your honor.  That is exactly what I was looking for.  How do I add something to that folder?  Can I simply drag a shortcut into it?  I guess that's what I'll try.  I feel sooo evil.  Muh ha ha ha.

We gave him the ol' "we need our space now" talk over the weekend.  Hopefully his lazy self starts looking for an apartment.  I'm too old to have a 'son' the same age as me living in my house.

Here is the program that you want.

Slippery Mouse

It makes your mouse uncontrollable unless you know the password to disable it.

That is almost exactly what I am looking for...except that it has a "kill me" button in the taskbar.  This takes away from that virus type feel and makes it a bit more obvious it's not a prank.  I'm testing out a few others to see which have the right feel to 'em.  Thanks for the link and keep up the good pointers.  I definately plan to have some fun with this.  Naughty revenge is delicious...I just want to make sure I take the time to cook it up right.  :rotfl:

I just got done watching the movie Saw...great flick.  I'm all sleepy and stuffs...off to bed now.  I'll implement my eeeeevil plan in the morning.

Alright, I've got it done.  Now I just have to wait until he comes home tonight and see how he deals with it.  I think I'm going to do it in stages if he doesn't say anything about it...let it get gradually worse.

Right now it is just setup to give a series of error messages.  Then I'll make it alternate caps/num lock on and off randomly.  After that it will be time for the bsod.  This is fun...weeeeeeeee

It goes like this...after the first night I think I'm pissed.  He came home from work and logged on and didn't say a word about the errors.   :grr: If you were on someone else's computer and got errors saying that all data on C: was corrupt, wouldn't you tell them?

I guess I need to add a new problem to the mix.  This time I'll mess with the mouse/pointer.  I'll let that ride out for a few days and then see if I can find a way to make it "lock up" when he logs on.  Lead him to believe that his neglegence lead up to a serious problem.  Then the fun is over and he is BANNED from MY computer.

Have you thought about trying the old "taking a screenshot of your desktop and setting it as your wallpaper" trick?  This way he'll try to click on programs that won't work.

I also had a little program that occassionally turns your cursor into a small hand that flips you the finger.

As far as the slippery mouse program, the version I had doesn't show that taskbar that the link I gave you did.  I guess it is a different version.

I'm sure that if you just do a browser search for computer pranks or computer desktop tricks or something like that you'd be able to find a ton of other stuff you could try.
