*tutorial* Converting Cars For Use With Xbox
« on: February 11, 2005, 02:33:00 PM »

This is my xbox GTA modding tutorial.  I've only messed with vice, but i've heard the steps should apply to GTA3 as well. It was originally hosted over at ninjahacker.net, but they have since been attacked with a lawsuit by Tecmo, and are no longer able to host information such as this. Many thanks to cypher35 of ninjahacker.

Step One:
Download IMG Tool:
http://www.codenamegta3.co.uk/includes/lin...=download&Id=46

Step Two:
Download TXD Workshop:
http://www.infofeast.com/delfi/gtatools/so...txdworkshop.zip

Step Three:
Browse GTAnetwork.it
http://www.gtanetwork.it/zone/pafiledb.php...n=category&id=2
for a car you want to add. (This site is italian).

Step Four: Extract the car you downloaded. In the folder, there should be three files. newcar.txd, newcar.dff, and a handling config file of some sort.

Step Five: Open newcar.txd in TXDWorkshop. In the Lower-right, drag the drop down menu to VC XBOX.

Then, select the first texture in the left hand column and click properties.

In the properties window, click compress, then click ok and wait while it processes.

*Note*
If you get an error at anytime during this process, the car will not work with the xbox version of GTA... currently, this is the case, although steps are being made to allow all textures to compress. This may have changed since the time I wrote this.

Step Five point Five:
Once the first texture is compressed, it will be indicated in this field.
(IMG:http://oregonstate.edu/~howardco/gta/5.JPG)

Continue to select each individual texture and work your way down until every texture indicates that it is compressed.
(IMG:http://oregonstate.edu/~howardco/gta/6.JPG)

Save the txd.
(Some txd's will have a few, or occasionally all, textures already compressed when downloaded. this is fine, just make sure you save it after selecting VC XBOX.)

*Note*
YOU CANNOT just hit compress all!!!
(IMG:http://oregonstate.edu/~howardco/gta/7.JPG)
90% of the time (in my experience) you get an error, which implies that the texture is incompatible with the xbox. When you go through one by one, the same textures will often work where "compress all" did not.

(NOTE! this has since been updated, and compress all does often work for the VC compression process, but if it is not, then follow my steps and you should have a fool proof way of doing this.)

Step Six:
Decide on the car you would like to replace. If, for example, you want to replace the virgo, then rename your newcar.dff and newcar.txd to virgo.dff and virgo.txd

Step Seven:
Using FlashFXP, Ftp into your xbox, and go to f/games/GTAVice/models/
Download gta3.img and gta3.dir into a folder on your PC. make sure they stay in the same folder together! also, make a second copy as backup of these original files in a seperate folder to save just in case you need to go back to an unmodded state.

Step Eight:
Open gta3.img with IMG tool. Under the Edit menu, click find and type the car you wanted to replace (like earlier, im using virgo).

The txd you searched for will be selected. Hit delete under the Commands menu.

The next item down should be the corrosponding dff. Make sure it is selected, and choose delete again.

Step Nine:
Under Commands, select add. Add your txd, then add your dff.

The two items will show up at the bottom of the list. Under Commands, click Rebuild Archive and wait. I've heard this can take up to seven minutes, but on my P3 733 it takes less than three...

Step Ten:
Once the archive is done rebuilding, ftp back into your xbox. Under the same directory as before (F/games/GTAVice/models/) delete gta3.img and gta3.dir. FTP over your new, modified gta3.img and gta3.dir

Step Eleven:
This is the most important step...the file GTA_VC.CAP.Final, found in the root folder (F/games/GTAVice/), right next to the default.xbe.

Step Twelve:
Blaze up and go play GTA with your new cars!
