A Crystal Xbox Question

QUOTE (RichG @ Apr 14 2004, 11:52 PM)
I hear you can see the Xbox serial number through a specally designed hole in the back of the box?

Yes this is true, you can see in through a hole in the back of the box

QUOTE
Finally also do XBOXES come sealed? The amount of people who have took consoles back... I dont want to pay £140 on a console which has had all its bagged opened and tried etc, im fussy that way! Is the seal just a see through circle sticker?

The Xbox's box itself does not come sealed in plastic but it does have a circular seethrough sticker over each opening. The xbox's top half wrapped in a layer of clear sticky plastic. The controllers are in a blue plastic bag and all the other accesories also in baggies (eg. AV cable, power cable)

QUOTE
Presuming I have the balls to ask the shop keeper if I can see the box before purchasing...

Good luck  beerchug.gif

Supposedly if you buy a Crystal, take it home and it is loud (presuming you do not void your warranty right away) you can call MS, complain and have it replaced at no charge. Worth a shot I guess.

Mine is the serial number mentioned above with a Nidec fan. It came from game shop or whatever it's called over there. Friend in Crewe, Cheshire picked it up and mailed it to me.

I would say just grow some balls and ask the shop keep to take one out and turn it on, if it is loud ask for another. The worst he/she can say is "no". My thoughts are if you show them your money, then they should help you out. Open it from the bottom and have them reseal the box if it is a loud fan.

My Nidec can honostly not be heard. I wouldn't even know it's on if it didn't have lights.

Or try to be lucky and buy one with the latest date possible.

I jsut checked. I have a sunon fan. But to be honest ive been using my xbox for days and it aint bothered me really.  Its only really perfectionists that are bothered about the volume, for a normal gamer like you seem to be I wouldnt worry about the fan.

I intend to put a lighted fan mod on mine anyway so it doesnt bother me too much anyways  smile.gif

how bout you just buy one and if it has the crap loud fan, buy a replacement fan from me for like $8... seriously all this so you don't get a 'loud' fan is pretty much a waste of time (at least in my op.)

Mine is:

2004-02-06
Serial: 2......40605

Don't know what fan, but don’t say more than my old v1.1 xbox (maybe even a little bit less).

Though I have herd, that the problem is the vibrations from the fan. If you have the "bad" fan, and the box is making to much noise, then just put some thing be twin the case and the aluminium (maybe a folded peace of paper, so it is setting tight, where the fan is). That should stop the noise, because it should come from vibrations be twin the inner and outer case.

I went to two shops in two different cities just to find out.
each store had about 10 Crystal Consoles piled up. I got myself a clerk and explained to him that I wanted to buy a Xbox but without one of the "defective" sunon fans.
after I showed him the trick (?) of opening the boxes from below he was willing to peek inside if the box had a good fan or a bad fan.
suffice to say that I went through 20 crystal packs and could not turn up a single one without a sunon fan. the serials were also pretty scattered.
so far I haven't met (!) a single person to buy a non defective crystal box.
When I called MS about it (to hav it replaced) they said that my error "can happen to a few people and isolated consoles", "why don't you try to change it at the store where you bought it".
after I explained to him that I went through 20 packages just for that he became less willing to share any more information.

considering the fact that fans don't appear out of nowhere on an assembly line, (especially not in small ammounts) my guess is that the entire crystal lineup is spoiled rotten. but on the upside MS now gets to know its customers better.

mine has the SUNON fan, but it didnt seem that loud when i turned it on.
I'm gonna get it modded soon, so if the fan is a problem i'll just replace it.
