Here's An Interesting Challenge...
« on: January 12, 2006, 01:27:00 PM »

I have a Need For Speed: Most Wanted gamesave from when I would play it at a friends house on his computer.  I bought the game for my Xbox, and I want to use that gamesave on it.

Now before you go thinking how impossible this sounds...

1) I checked the hex, and the two files are incredibly similar.
2) They're both 62-63 kilobytes.
3) The game settings are stored in seperate files.  The gamesave contains all profile data.
4) They both use the same naming convention.  It's just "(NAME)", with no extension.

I tried changing the top of the hex.  I thought there might be an identifier for what type of system you're playing on.  No luck with that.

Anybody have any ideas?

Xbox gamesaves are digitally signed, look at the last 16 bytes of the xbox save, I believe that's where you'll find the signature in this case.
For the PC save to have any chance of working on the Xbox you must add a digital signature to the end of the file as well as make any other relevant changes.

I'm guessing the signature is a hash made up of the data in the file?  If so, then screw it.  If not though, I'll take two identical games (save right after first load) and compare.
