How To Find File Format/compression Used?
« on: October 23, 2005, 08:02:00 AM »

All the moddable/editable games out there... are they known formats or are fans simply creating tools for newly discovered formats etc?

Just wondering because I've been trying to extract textures from NBA 2K6 and can't find an ounce of info in any of the files. The are just 0, 1, 2, 3... and so on. Like 300 to 900 mb files with no extension whatsoever.

The 0 file could be viewed and extracted with Dragon Unpacker but in there were only a heap of wave files Windows could not play. So I thought all files might be .pak like this file, but they weren't.

Is there something to look for in the file when hex viewing or any other info anyone with experience can help me with?

I guess anyone with the game could also take a look at the files, but any help for this game and other games in general would be much appreciated.

Thanks

First off, I do NOT have the game in question.

HOWEVER, I do have NBA 2K4, and more importantly 2K3.

I say more imortantly because it appears that the 0, 1, 2... without file extention structure was implemented with 2K4.
2K3 is not like that. 2K3 has primarilly .IFF, .CDF, and .BIN files not counting the single "sound.xsb" "wave.xwb" "arialuni.ttf" (the font) and "dlcustom.xpr" files contained within the media folder.

Unless the entire engine was revamped after 2K3 (which I doubt) then I reason that to a certain extent this is most likely what you can expect to find within the 0, 1, 2, 3... files- once extracted.

Hope that helped.

Thanks for the reply:)
Yeah I seem to remember them in 2K3 but again, I could never extract or even find textures.

If those files do still exist in the current version, I still can't find a way to extract them unfortunately.

It's a pity because NBA Live on PC has texture extracting tools and even Live on Xbox has a slightly workable tool to change textures. It makes the game look better and different so I'd love to try it with 2K.

And genius out there want to help?  B)

Stuff to look when hex editing...
1. Do the files start off in a similar fasion? (i.e. do they have a header)
2. Is there a file somewhere that totally different from the others? (i.e. an index file)
3. Do you see anywhere in a file with more filenames... possibly filenames ending with .ebo, .xsh, .o
4. Is the data in the files well spaced out and sometimes repeating, or is it all just lumped (i.e. is it compressed?)
5. If 3 is true, or likely to be true, do you see the sequence 10 FB in hex, followed by a bunch of data and ending with 00 FC (known compression algorithm EA has used since ever)

Ah.. thought it was NBA 06.. guess I read it wrong.
Well, you should still be looking for similar stuff, except for ".ebo, .xsh, .o", and #5.
Good luck!
