Doesnt sound like to bad of a trade, just make sure you like the bike you're getting.

Also something to consider, if you plan on riding long distances, the crotch-rocket type bikes can tend to be uncomfortable sometimes (from having to hold your body weight up). If you plan on doing a lot of long rides (like 3 or more hours worth at a time) you may want to look into somethign that you sit more strait up. Or you can get a kit to turn a Ninja (I know they hav ethem for other bikes, I've just seen one, on my uncles ZX-11) that will let the handlebars be very adjustable, so you can get them into more of a strait-up riding position, or move them back down for that 'sporty' feel.

Anyone have any thoughts on something older like an 82 Honda Cb 900 Custom. Appears to be near the top of the line as far as Hondas went back in the day. Someone offered one in trade for my parts Probe. Im thinking it may not be a bad deal as Id be very apt to buy something a bit overpowered for a beginner type bike. Anyone, anyone? Bueller?

Car runs fine. Spec motor. Has some cosmetic blemishes and a brake leak. Also prob could use a clutch.

Well this isnt really what i want. But it seems like a good bike for a few months to learn on. I think if I got what i wanted it'd result in a story of some sort. Either me telling a story from a jail cell or wheel chair, or a friend telling one @ my funeral. This may very well be the best bet for me while learning.

My suggestion....don't get a crotch rocket, they're so uncomfortable for rides longer than 20 min.

Don't know about that CB900 from the photo.  There's quite a bit of rust on the shocks and pipes, and not sure what condition the engine is in.

I'd guess it's worth about $800 to $1000.

Honestly, I'd steer you away from that one as a first bike.  It's going to be heavy and easier to tip at slower speeds.

Positives:
+ price
+ shaft drive
+ proven solid engine
+ parts plentiful and easy to find

Negatives:
- Lots of HP for a first bike
- heavy
- poor handling, compared to newer bikes or sportbikes
