In-dash Screens
« on: September 29, 2004, 12:07:00 PM »

I got a delima. I want to get an in-dash lcd screen for my Ranger, but I'm stuck between a 7'' retractable and a 6.5 double-din.
The 6.5 is flush mounted, so it looks like the new navi lcds that they are putting in cars. It look sleek, but if you look in my car, you'll beable to see that it's a screen, and for security reason I don't like that.
The 7'' is bigger  :D and retracts back into the dash. Making it easier to conseal.
The quality on both are the same, and the price isn't too far off each other.
I just want some input on which you would get.

I don't have one, (unfortuantely), but I love the 7" motorized screens that fold out of the dash. What brand are you looking at?

I like the motorized one that slides out. Having a screen in dash just yells steal me.
You gonna stick a modded xbox somewhere in the car and hook it up through the line input of that monitor? And then get a wireless xbox network adapter so you can ftp movies and music to your xbox while your car is parked in the garage?

the price should be substantially different!  UNLESS* you are looking for a 6.5" screen that will also play dvd/mp3.  There are very few dedicated screens that don't do anything but display.  Most in-dash (read: retractable) screens come with a DVD player built in or at the least an mp3 player. used ones can go for cheap (sort of)..like 700-1200 bucks. But a good 6.5" screen brand new should only cost about $400, used would cost even less.  I've had at least 6 screens over the past 2 years.  the prices are always different, but the quality is usually the same.

I was talking about dvd/mp3/cd players. I was looking at the err I wanna say alpine, been so long now. As for the retractable, I don't have any price in mind. The flush in-dash 6.5in one was $950 on an ebay stores item list. the 7'' run for about the same price.
I was considering the wireless network adapter, I already have my house on Wireless-G, but than again, My laptop would suffice for file-transfers.
I've decieded not to get an indash screen tho. I'm holding out till my next car, I just bought a Iriver H120, and I'm ordering a cheap-o indash reciever with a line-in.
