Yeah, I know BMW and M-B don't break down that often, but when they do, grab the vaseline. Parts are expensive, and you usually have to use genuine because aftermarket don't make parts for them. I don't care what make you buy, you'll have to do maintenance and repairs. Brakes and belts and lights don't last forever.

No there not seen as luxury cars. They're seen as cheaper, shittier made cars aimed at folks who think that driving a $30,000 M-B puts them higher on the status ladder than those who drive a $30,000 American car. Here, the quality between the foreign and US is comparable. You don't pay more for quality, you pay more for name.

I suggested Mitsubishi because for around 13k you can buy a new Lancer decently equipped, with 0 miles and 7year/100k warranty.

Another thing with auction vehicles: you have to remember that they are at the auction for a reason. I work for a dealership (yes, Mitsubishi, along with Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge), and the other day we took in 98 subaru Impreza with 45k miles on trade, and the engine sounded real ticky (lifter noise). We added a quart of real thick oil to the engine to take care of tick noise long enough for it to go through the auction. Whoever buys the car will have a ticky engine after a couple of oil changes. Yes, this sounds dirty, but this happens EVERYWHERE ! A lot of cars on a used car lot come from auction. Keep this in mind when used car shopping, and ask the person whose selling it what kind of history it has. If it was a trade in, ask if you can talk to the previous owner. it never hurts. A lot of late model cars come from a corporation auction, which means most of them are previous rental cars. They don't have the dirty tricks put into them, but may have had a rough life. (Picture Days of Thunder movie when they are racing the rentals). Hopefully my pointers will help keep you from becoming a sucker on a car lot!

Hehe, "you have to remember that they are at the auction for a reason". Since all kinds of cars are sold on eBay I don't see where you're heading with this "argument".

About that 30k bs I think you're about the only one thinking this, aslo since you called them "luxury" cars. As I said, these are common and safe quality cars, nothing more.

Keep to the facts as the rest of us.

Nothing lasts for ever, but higher quality will make sure it lasts longer than a crappy jap car.

How did it get the name? - Trough building quality cars. Saying that you pay for the name is just annother way of expression.

If theese cars were pure crap they would have no name to make money of.

Since you're so obsessed by warranties you should also know that Mercedes has the greatest rust warranty.

I'd probably be looking for an RX7 or something else sporty.

100% agree. I didn't know if I should suggest it or not, since he isn't very into cars, but then he said he wanted something fast, sporty, and economic.

The RX-7 is indeed perfect. But the age?...

Yeep, 1993 is old. I'd go for the 2001 Saab 9-5 if I only had 13k.

no one had said integra yet... i would have loved an integra when i was 17.

and it probably depends where you live on if your insurance is going to go up or not.  and you parents should only know if the car is registered to them... if it is then you are fucked and i am almost positive that they would be notified.

am i stupid for liking the hyundai tiburon?

Yeah, It looks like a half-assed rip-off of a Pontiac Sunfire (POS car in and of itself).  That and Hyundais have Mitsubishi innards which is something I would never want to pay $13K for.  The RX-7 would be one sweet ride but a 3rd Generation one would be more than a little out of your price-range.  Given your price, I would give a Nissan a shot.  It might not be the two door sports coupe but I garantee you it will:  1. Have more HP than the wanna-be Sunfire.  2. Last longer than the re-badged Mitsubishi.

Bullshit!

1st gen. 1979-1985
2nd gen. 1986-1991
3rd. gen. 1993-1995

If you're telling me that you can't get a 3rd gen. RX-7 for less than 13k you need to wake up.

You can get a 3rd gen. show car for 13k!

I need to wake up????  So do you.  Being an RX-7 owner I know a thing or two about them.  Anyone who knows anything about RX-7s will tell you that there is a world of difference between 1st/2nd Generation RX-7s and 3rd Generation RX-7s.  1st and 2nd Generation RX-7s are a dime a dozen.  3rd Generation RX-7s were produced in much smaller quantities.  In fact the only year where there were a significant number of 3rd Generation RX-7s were produced was 1993.  1994 still had quite a few but not nearly as many and 1995 3rd Generation RX-7s are quite rare indeed (at least here in the US).  Yes you can get a 3rd Generation RX-7 for less than $13K but in showroom condition?  I think not.  For less than 13K you are going to get one with VERY high miles on the engine and the TT 3rd Generation Rotary engines aren't known for lasting long, so you will have to invest in a replacement motor before too long after buying it.  $15K is about the current pricetag I have seen for a 3rd Generation RX-7 in really good condition and for a show car you are looking between $18-$20K for starters.

Here is what a recent search turned up at autotrader.  There are RX-7s at $13K or less but none of them are in what would be considered showroom condition.  A few of them have re-built engines but that doesn't mean much.  The average cost of these RX-7s on autotrader was over $16K.  You still want to tell me you could get a show car for $13K or less?  Also keep in mind that this was a nation-wide search so the odds of even finding a 3rd generation RX-7 with low mileage (or a new motor) at $13K or less nearby is pretty remote:

I've been looking for a car myself, but a bigger vehicle, and no American crap.

I used to have a Toyota Camry 1992 LE, but it's way too small for me.

Are there bigger vehicles, that have more room for the passengers, but as well as the vehicle?

Because some of the stuff I've been seeing lately are just big, and they have the same interior space as a Toyota, or BMW.

Plus, I've never driven stick, so I kinda like Automatic.
