The motor itself will only take a few gears, pulleys, or something to get power to the wheels. The real chore will be a frame. With brakes. And a steering wheel. And such. Try checking classifieds or ebay to see if you may be able to dig up a frame easily. I'd also wager there are plenty of sites that sell kits.   <

A lawnmower engine will NOT work if you do get a vertical shaft mower engine to turn horizontal wheels it will be weak. I suggest using only chains for primary and final drive. The easyest part will be the brakes, go to a motorcycle salvage yard and get some off a wrecked street bike, be sure to get the full floating rotors. Get everything (rotors, calipers, master cylinder, brake lines. and any mounting hardware) If you find a working bike engine grab that too. For the frame, bite the bullet and get plans off ebay or something. Being unfamiliar with welding/metal work will ruin you project, so let someone else design the fame.
Good luck bro  <

I've seen full working frames with steering and brakes fully working for sale for 50 bucks. Mechanical braking, but still acceptable. I will agree that a lawnmower engine is not the optimal setup. I'd think motorcycle, moped, or even really big chain saw engine is more your needs.   <

yes you definitely need a Horizontal shaft if you're going to make a go kart most rototiller engines work perfect or you could put a 750 dirtbike engine on it and get it clocked at 110mph and need disc brakes on all 4 wheels and while going 110mph not have the balls to make it go any faster thats the go kart my dads friend built he also owns his own body shop

u could use a lawn mower engine if u use a bike chain... something that has a lil twist to it so it can change directioin of power from spinning perpendicular to the ground to spinning parallel to the ground

Hell no that wouldnt work! Twisting a chain like that would cause it to break, instantly. A brand new chain wont twist like that, by the time you are able to get it to flex it will be far too weak and its tensile strength will be diminished.
I don't know of any companys who sell dirtbikes with 750s,street bikes yes. A KX500 or CR500 would be the best engine you could put in a small kart like that. Where I work we build custom stuff like this as side projects for taking to shows and screwing around on. I get discounts from parts unlimited so let me know if you need anything.   <

The first is the Toyota 86 from Initial D and the 2nd is a first gen Probe GT. (I own a red 2nd gen, but can't find a decent pic to use.) Besides I like the first better.

There are plenty of horizontal shaft motors as listed. A snowblower is another option. It's make your life far easier then trying to convert vertical to horizontal with gearing of some sort. Figure out what your needs for speed and power are and that should give you an idea of what you need for an engine. I've found during spring cleaning people toss fully working snowblowers and chain saws around here. Sometimes a bent blade, or broken Auger pin is enough to cause them to toss it. That great if all you need is an engine.  <

why not mount the engine like this
CODE
_____
         |        |___
         |        |___|
         |_____|

instead of this
[CODE]______
         |         |
         |_____|
             |_|

sorry if thats a stupid idea  ph34r.gif

I'm assuming that's a lawnmower engine rolled onto it's side? If you do that odds are you're gonna have severe issues. Engines were made to sit in one direction.

Easiest issue I can think of. The gas tank relies on the engine sitting in one direction. It sucks gas from the bottom of the tank. If you tip it, it's gonna be trying to pull gas from some point on the side, which would not be as effective. Granted a few mods may fix that.   <

All you have to do is take a small differential (from an ATV or riding lawn mower) from a salvage yard, and weld one of the axleoutputs solid so it can't move. That way all the power that is put through it goes to the other axle output. You weld or bolt the shaft from your engine to where the driveshaft connects to the differential and put your sprocket of clutch system on the axcl out put that is not welded or bolted solid. Problem solved.
