it starts scanning the X drive and crashes

Here are the steps you need to do to fix this problem (hopefully).

1. Using a program like BoxPlorer, delete EVERYTHIN in your XBOXs X, Y and Z drives (don't delete anything in any other drive).
2. Reboot your XBOX and load up your map again.
3. Reboot your XBOX to your dash again.
4. Reboot your PC.
5. Try Cartographer again.

QUOTE
strange because all my Halo temp files are in my Y drive

Cartographer scans X Y and Z because your XBOX can arbitrarily decide one day to start storing temp files on another drive. Myself and others have seen this occur, so I just have it scan all three.

QUOTE
in my Y directory there are 2 large (200MB +) map files

Yup, you're right. Halo keeps the two most recently played single player maps and the three most recently played multiplayer maps in cache at all times. The 200MB maps are the single player map. If you've only played one, I believe it would be cache000.map and cache001.map would just be garbage until you play another one. You cannot assume which map is which by looking at it's title.

Your method of manually transferring the map makes sense if you continue to have problems after following my steps above. But Cartographer has a bug that it doesn't check that you're opening the right map file for the map you want to edit. The easiest way to determine that you've opened the right one is to open the Element Editor. If everything says "Unknown" on the right-hand side, you didn't open the right map file.

applied the "2x and 10x on all weapons" effect ... There was no change at all to the weapons.

Two possibilities here. First is that you edited the wrong map file (remember, watch for the "Unknown"s in the Element Editor). Second possibility is that there is a problem with the "All Weapon Zoom" effect on "Silent Cartograper". Michast was the only one that could help me test the effects the night before I released. There were a huge number of map and effect combination to test, and we only were able to test a handful so it's quite possible that there is an error in that effect for that level. Try the effect in another map (like Blood Gulch). If it works in another map, you can submit it as an effect bug to the author.

im waorking on the effect.ced

I'm glad you're working on the conversion, and you're on the right track. But you shouldn't be editing the effect.ced file. You need to go to the Effects Section of the Cartographer website, right-click on the link to "Package One" and choose "Save Target As" to save the package to your local disk.

Don't worry, you haven't wasted your time because effects.ced and Package One should have nearly identical content in them at this point. However, effects.ced is your local master effects database and isn't distributable. There is additional information in the effect package that makes it distributable, and once you've finished your conversion people will be able to click a link to your modified package to install it.

If / when you complete the conversion, send it my way so I can include it on my main page. I'll also upload a copy to HaloSkins (or you can if you want).

Thanks for making the effort. I would have tried to convert a few of them myself before I released, but I was on a really tight deadline and I didn't have a PAL box Halo to test it on.

Tell me if I'm wrong here- the offsets for MP maps are the same for both PAL and NTSC, right? Its just the SP levels that are different? So therefore I should be able to use the new effects feature on MP levels before the complete PAL conversion...
Or am I way off here?
I have a PAL xbox, btw.

Shit. I wrote the converter HexToXML for people going from Hex to XML (duh) but I didn't really think about needing it the other way around. I'll try and modify it tonight so you can paste in the XML on the bottom and get the hex back out on the top. Sorry, don't know why it didn't cross my mind that we'd need it. I'll be in touch.

actully halo is magical... the first person who played the game after it was released made the game with his mind as he played it and every other copy magicly doe sthe same
rolleyes.gif
oh course its on the freaking disc

Then why isn't there a program that can compress and decompress the files, so someone with the whole game backed up on their hdd could decompress the maps, edit them with cartographer, then recompress them, ftp to xbox hdd and run it from there?

then there wouldn't have to be any fiddling with the cache files.

to do that you'd have to extensive reverse engineering, trial and error, get lucky or have the halo source, right?
