NEWS

Cartographer v1.0 Beta 4
8/15/2003 11:15 PM

What's New?
-----------
Application now completely done in Halo theme

Modified elements now show in a different color so you can see what's been changed at a glance

Map selection screen now support map images and also displays map type

Modifications are now loaded from saved maps so that previously saved changes are displayed correctly

Direct edit on the XBOX is now supported (local file mode still supported)

You've all been asking for the ability to see changes made in previous editing sessions or by other software. 1.0 B4 now correctly supports this. If a change has been made to an element that Cartographer doesn't understand, it will be listed as Unknown.

Direct edits on the XBOX are now supported. This should clear up a LOT of the problems you all have been having. I learned that single player maps can be cache000 or cache001. Multi-player maps can be cache003, cache004 or cache005. The direct cache editor takes care finding the right map and transferring it for you automatically. Direct cache editing is seamless.

Looks GREAT, but I cannot edit the file directly on the xbox.
I can get connected, but I always receive the error "Error: Unable to notify the server of the active data port (PORT command failed.)"  when it is trying to switch to the cache directory.

I can verify that the cache files are on Z: and I have no problem with the program when editing them on my PC and then manually FTPing them.  Everything else seems to be working perfectly.

Thanks eXentric!  Awesome job.

Hmmm... Well, I assumed that cache files would always be on Y drive... Maybe that isn't the case... Well, I'm afraid you will have to continue to use the file method if you have these types of problems until I get back. Sorry guys. At least change tracking should work no matter where the file comes from...

As far as the PORT command... Wonder if thats cause I'm specifying the Y drive or something else. I'm using a 3rd pary FTP library but I do have source... but I don't know it very well either. Any thoughts are welcome.

The program runs fine until I transfer over the PalKeys file (which overwrites the original file) then when I run it I get the following message -

The Cartographer data file could not be loaded. Additional Infomation. Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

What am I doing wrong?

Does the PalKey file need to be renamed and sit alongside the original file?

I too have all my cache files on Z. Some people may have problems with this program if they are using Avalaunch as it only displays C E F and N (the DVD) on the FTP. That may be something you want to note until (if?) Team Ava changes this.

wouldn't you be able to use boxplore or another file manager to access z drive copy file over then copy back again?

Yeah, but the current bug is that Cartographer only looks toward the Y drive when using the XBox cache option. I added the info about Avalaunch to make it common knowledge.

You can still edit the ones with '?'s next to them. Not all the icons have been created yet.

When I load up Blood Gulch only a few things are displayed with a picture all the others have a question mark instead, does this mean I can only edit the ones with pics?

no, the ones with the question marks just mean that it doesn't have a picture yet. eXentric is working on that though.

My problem:
I have PAL, i have the new Beta 4 version with the new PAL ctg file. when i edit the file, and then send it back...all that works fine, but when i go to start a muiltplayer game, it either freezes at the pre-gameplay screen (where u edit what team ur on) or it freezes when u go to use the modification (eg, i edited to make plasma grenades come out of a shotgun,) and when u shoot it, it freezes.

I should say, that before the Beta 4 came out, i was using Beta 3, that was working totally fine. so i don't know why its stuffed now...

yeah...i don't use the FTP addon thats in the new BEta version, i just use Flash FXP

Thanks

Save bug in B4

I found a save bug in beta 4 last night as I was having a small lan party before I left for vacation. The problem is that my logic is to never save an element that is uncahanged from its original value. The logic is wrong because I should always save an element unless it hasn't changed from whatever it was when I loaded the map. What this means is this:

Warthog -> Ghost (save) works.

Warthog -> Ghost (save) -> Scorpion (save) works.

Warthog -> Ghost (save) -> Scorpion (save) -> Warthog (save)  -- leaves the Warthog as a Scorpion.

In other words, I don't save in the last scenerio because Warthog == Warthog. Where, I should save because Warthog != Scorpion.

Sorry fellas, I'll have to fix this when I return. I will also fix the cache problem; I'll add a drive letter drop-down to the cache settings screen.

Sorry I missed all that, but hopefully B5 will look really good. Dimava has offered to grab high-resolution item images while I'm out. I don't know how many items he'll get, but I'll add them to B5. I'll fix these bugs in B5, and I have one more idea too. I'm going to make the Cache Info dialog pop back up on saving. Since the settings are saved, you will just have to hit OK. This would have been usefull for me last night at my lan party, when we had two boxes and we wanted to play modified maps across the LAN. Man... I can already see a need for a connection manager...

Anyway, have fun guys.
