QUOTE (ninjatech @ Aug 13 2003, 01:42 AM)
I don't know what I am doing wrong...

I cleared the Xbox cache, then I loaded blood gulch, reset, and retrieved cache003.map via FTP.

Then I opened Cartographer.exe, selected open, and then blood gulch.

I made my changed, and clicked save. It told me the file name didnt match, but I saved anyway.

FTPed it back over, booted up Halo and then loaded a game in BG... no differences.

I know I am doing a step wrong, but I cannot fdigure out what it is, nor can I find a basic tutorial.

Thanks for any help!

I am using NTSC Halo. When I open the program and select open, all of the files show 0 size, filenames are all *.map

Yup. Sorry guys. I had to do this to get the AllMaps out to you as soon as possible. I have to go (tonight or tomorrow night) and load up every single map and determine which cache file is the right one and the file size of each map. Then, I will update the ctg file again.

This is important for two reasons:

  • It will help you guys when opening a map to know which cache file needs to be overwritten.
  • When I implement 'FTP Editing', this is how Cortagrapher will know which file to grab.

I plan to have an update tonight that will also detect if you have the wrong map cache file when you go to save (many maps use the same cache file cache003.map for example).

can you dump all of Halo to the hard drive, ... edit, then send them back?

Sadly, no. I believe this is completely possible if I were to implement the map decompression / compression routines. I think I have some C++ code for that, but nothing in C# yet. If you have information on how this would work or if you can code the C# routine, I would really like to hear from you.

PAL USERS:
I know you guys are being kind of left out in the cold with this one. This is only because I don't have a good source for all of the PAL offsets. TRUST ME, importing these things is a bitch. Every item is different in every map. Just one map takes FOREVER. BOLL told me he could look into spitting out a format closer to Cortographers ctg files, but I haven't talked to him recently and I don't know if he has PAL offsets. If you would like to help with this, you can contact me.

Lastly,

Last night a friend of mine tried it with his NTSC version and had problems. I plan to work with him and see where the problem is. Could it be that there are more then one set of offsets even for NTSC? *shudder* I hope not.

Hey...
i think what u might be looking for might be used in this program Halo Map Editor v1.2...but i could be wrong...might be a good idea to check it out...
once again...this is in NTSC....so PAL won't work with it...crap

Let me know if you still have trouble after Friday wink.gif

You can replace any item in a map with a vehicle or cause a vehicle to be spawned by replacing a weapon projectile with that vehicle (i.e. shooting out new vehicles). The trouble is that the vehicle has to already be in the map. There is some news going round about adding vehicles to MP maps that don't have them. I'll take a look into that at a later time. Meanwhile, if you wanna add vehicles to non-vehicle MP maps, I suggest you take a look at Xbox-Wireds Map randomization wizard when it becomes available.

any possibility on making levels dark maps

Sorry... can you clearify?

Yes, this is a pitfall of the offsets I have right now. I need to work with the master output files some more and get more stuff into the ctg file. Please enjoy what's in there for the time being, or feel free to add the offsets for the maps you want yourself.

I'll check back soon guys. Have fun.

NOTES TO PAL IMPORTERS:

Please see the output files that have been provided by Nick. These are for NTSC, but I think they should exist (or could be obtained) for PAL also. I plan to write an importer at some time that takes the text in the output files and converts them to the stg format. If / when that is complete, Cartographer should support all elements in all maps. If this same process were applied to a PAL version of the output files, the same would be true for PAL.

I am busy working on my Friday release, so I deffinately won't get to that right now. But, if someone wants to write a parser in the mean time, it would be helpful. The output files are all text and my ctg file is XML. My class types and element types are defined here, although they are a little out of date. Contact me if you are going to attempt this.
