Question For Xport
« on: December 09, 2007, 07:32:00 AM »

Hey sorry to bother you man but something has really started bothering me.

On my 27 Flat Screen SDTV, when I play any of your emulators with skins I have made my images get cut off around the edges.  For the longest time I thought this was normal so when I skinned I would leave a fairly large gap around the outsides of the images like your default skins have.

The other day I took my Xbox to a friends and we played. On his LCD my skin images were full.  (640x480) and I could see my gaps around the edges.

I am assuming my TV has some overscan.  When I play a video game or watch TV or a Movie its fine.  And I can set the overscan amount for XBMC.

However when I use a emulator of yours or even when I just view a 640x480 image on XBMC its cutting off the edges of said image?

Can you tell me why this is and if I can fix it short of getting a new TV?  I also recall softmodding xboxs and when its showing the image for UnleashX stuff is cut off around the edges.

I am thinking most things are auto-correcting my overscan, but the emulators and for some reason the images shown on XBMC are not getting corrected?

Do you have any idea how I can fix this or something?  Its bothering the crap outta me.  I have LOTS of house in my skins and its making me mad that when and if I get a new TV they are going to look stupid because I had to leave all that empty space around the boarders sad.gif

For some reason I cant edit my first post.

I also wanted to let you know I tryed one of my images in Zsnexbox and on that emulator my image appears correctly without chopping off the sides of it.

This tells me that its a emulator thing and not my TV, at least if it is my TV the emulator can be configured to change it.

Is there a way to make your emulators do this?  Please let me know and thanks!

what setting is it?  I can adjust the one for the ingame screen but there is nothing I can do as far as the GUI is concerned, at least not as far as I know.

Dude,

Try to turn ON the 10x11 PIXEL ASPECT RATIO option (present
on the recent released Xport emulators).

Or, if you are using the previous versions, change your video mode
to 720×480. Maybe this will help you.

Check out my tutorial here for interesting stuff regarding
the screen configs:

Cheers,

Hi and thanks for helping.

First off you do know im only talking about the interface for the emulators.  I can easily adjust the screen for games and such with no problems.

How exactly do I turn on the 10x11 pixel aspect ratio?  (I think I have all the latest emulators as I just checked about 3 weeks ago and got all the newest)

Wont chaning my video mode to 720x480 screw things up since my TV is SD only?

And lastly, in your guide its very helpful for games but does any of it pertain to the GUI/interface for the emulators?

Please let me know and thanks!

PS- Xpot, if you read this I looked into zsnexbox and it has a calibrate GUI interface option so you can change the size of the GUI.  With all your great emulation options why isnt there one?  Not bashing your stuff because I love it to death and use it for every system I have on my box just curious.  It would be great to have because no matter what TV you use you can always make a quick adjustment in the menus and be done with it.

Yes,

The 10x11 mode does affect the games AND the emulator interface!
And the 720x480 does affect both as well...
It is located inside the VIDEO SETTINGS in all Xport emulators.

And don't worry, you will not crash anything.
Switch to the 720x480 mode, take a peek, and turn back if you don't like.

Regards,
Cospefogo.

I cannot find the 10x11 thing that you are talking about.  I have checked all the emulators I have and cant find anything.

I did switch the res but couldnt see any noticable results.  It looks exactly the same to me?

Any other ideas?  This is annoying the crap outta me along with the fact that images I try to display through the emulators get shown in 16bit, causing gradiants to look like pure ass sleep.gif

Wow thats great, I was worried I was the only one ^^

You see this wouldnt be such a big deal to me if I hadent found out that some TVs/LCDs will display the whole picture.  On my main TV its cutting off the edges.  However on my portable 7in LCD it DOES NOT do this.

That tells me in the future when I get my new LCD TV or something my emulators are going to look like ass because I have left all that room around the edges.  And trust me I spend MANY hours on my skins and I dont want to have to remake them down the road.

The thing I dont understand is that it should be simple to add another option to calibrate the GUI just like you can do for the in game screen?  SnesXbox has that feature and it makes it so simple.  If I get a new TV just change the settings so it fits and im done.

Either way im glad im not the only one with this problem.

You dont have any idea how to fix the problem im having with color banding on my images with gradiants do you?  (for example- I make a emulator skin with a gradiant background, on PC it looks good but when on the Xbox it makes it a 16bit image and then the color gradiant gets messed up and you can see visable bars/rings where it transitions colors.  Trust me it makes the image unviewable.)

Micjohvan, have you found the pixel aspect raio setting and does it fix the problem?

I would love to know myself as I posted with this question a while back. I can't test any new emus because my joypad's got a faulty wire and it'll not work!  If it does fix the screen calibration problem (and if I get a new joypad soon), then I'll post some skins I've been working on smile.gif

No it dosent fix it sad.gif

The problem is our TVs are overscanning and xports emulators are not automatically adjusting to this as some TVs do it and some dont.

It shouldnt be to hard to make it auto-adjust but a even better and SIMPLIER solution to this is to just add a option to calibrate the GUI screens like you can for the in game screens.  That way everyone is happy and if it dosent fit right its a simple adjustment.

Has the source for all the newest emulators been release?  I may take a look at it and see if I can implament such a adjustment but Im not to good with C yet and im not sure if it requires a XDK to compile although I do know some people.

Xport, if you read this please chime in and give us your thoughts.  Im sure your busy and im not going to bother you with PMs but if you have a idea for a solution that would be great.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info Xport!

Is there any chance of this being something you would implament (the simple version you mentioned is ok with me, dont care about the transitions to much)

Even if you only did it for the more popular emulators such as NES,GEN,GBA,PCE,PSX that would be great.  I have asked some of my buddies I know with XDKs if they think they could do it but I havent heard much back yet.

Nope, because people like the transition effects (and I don't know what other problems it would cause by just doing a hackjob). I also don't want to try and support two codebases. Anyway, I don't have time even if it was something I'd want to do.

This is a shame. If I made a skin for one of your emulators, I'd rater have it look right than have transistion effects - in fact, I'd rather not have the effects at all.
