Using Xbmc With A Harmony Remote?
« on: February 10, 2008, 06:13:00 PM »

I just picked up a harmony remote control and set it up with XBMC. I'm loving it so far. Anyone else use one? One problem I've been having is I can't find the button to use to get it out of the visualization screen, except for if I stop the music.

also Just wondering if anyone else has some good customizing tips for buttons that they found handy with XBMC

I am using 550 and my only complain is the delay between is too long even I have set it to its shortest which is 100ms

About your question, I do remember that I need to map the "pre" button on the harmony to the xbox remote's back button.  The display button simply doesn't work and I need to train the harmony remote with the xbox remote.  After that, ever single key from the xbox remote is available on my harmony remote.

Yes I do!,

I bought a harmony 1000, but mainly use the cursor keys for basic operation.
When ever I use XBMC for other things and play with visualization I use my wireless pad.
There's nothing faster then the game-pad...

btw. I gave up to optimize programming to Harmony - I also use wireless extenders, though when ever I change a single button it takes me 15Minutes to go through the whole process... :-(

I set up my Harmony 688 with the goal of never actually having to break out the game controller.  This meant I had to map out a full-screen button and a context menu button.  Both turned out to be really easy.  I installed the xbmc as a media center PC, the context menu and fullscreen buttons were either already available or easily map-able using the xbox remote and the additional commands list of Keymap.xml, and everything worked out smoothly.

I mapped the context menu to "guide" anded the "fullscreen" button to the additional buttons to the top, and mapped everything else to its obvious corollary.  I then reduced the delays of the remote to practically nothing.

And ta-da!  Fully working remote control.  For typing in names, it's not the fastest remote ever, but for everything else it works like a dream.

yeah I've got it all mapped now and its working awesome. I had a bad delay but I put the option on the remote to 0 and that didn't happen anymore.

Is there anyway you can map the Sleep Timer, and Power Off Options on the remote?

One nice thing I did was with the lcd that you can customize, I put sections for Videos, Music, Weather and mapped those keys to open those, I find it pretty handy

Boy I wish there was an easy way to share the work done by others on programming the Harmony remotes.

I also have a Harmony 1000i but the Xbox remote is the one remote I still pull out as I just don't have the time to build up the profile from scratch.

It took me forever to figure this out, but it turns out the Harmony software associates the "PowerToggle" command with the Display button on the Xbox remote.  I have my Guide button set to PowerToggle and it works great.

Edit - this is on my Harmony 550, if it matters.

I also found this guide while reading over the manual - might prove helpful to others:

I removed all the other remote tags in keymap.xml so as not to confuse it, but I have only been at this a week so I am far from an expert. Be careful if you go crazy on your keymap.xml file and make a coding syntax error, it will keep xbmc from loading when you restart.

I hope this makes sense.

I have an 885, which (AFAICT) is the euro-version of the 880, but I don't see stuff like 'Down Arrow' in the logitech software. Which version of the logitech software do you use? I'm using 7.4.3.

What does the 'Random' mapping do, BTW, and which key have you mapped to 'back'?

There is a special remote called media center extender for xbox.
You can choose this remote with your harmony 525 like this.
Go to devices / add device
Device-game console with dvd / manufacturer- microsoft / model-media center extender xbox
(next)
(next)
No - I do not have a remote for this device(next)
(next)
(done)
Your back at devices select now settings from the just added device.
Set up this device based on a similar device. (next)
No - I do not have a remote for this device(next)
Pusch on. View more similar devices.. And select
Microsoft Media Center Extender for XBOX. (next)
(done)

Customize Buttons

prev - back
ok - enter
exit - clear
* - *
# - #
Teletext Red - My tv
Teletext Green - My pictures
Teletext yellow - My videos
Teletext bleu - My music

Extra buttons

On/off - powertoggel
Mediacenter - mediacenter
scripts - livetv
Screenshot - recordedtv

You must learn 1 button and thats the display.
Call the button display and place it with the extra buttons.

Now you need to change your keymap a little bit.
Rename these 2 commands to

<record>XBMC.RestartApp()</record>
<mytv>XBMC.ActivateWindow(MyPrograms)</mytv>

And add this (global)

<livetv>XBMC.ActivateWindow(Scripts)</livetv>
<Recordedtv>Screenshot</Recordedtv>

Now you got 42 buttons with each a function.

The extra functions are. (compared to normal remote)

power off
Restart xbmc (Verry nice)
Media center (back to main menu)
My prog
My pictures
My videos
My music
Scripts
Sreenshot
settings - # - symbols
* - shift
exit

This is my device setting. These setting I also use for all activities with the xbox.

Greatings

I've got a 885 and its working great - except there's also a noticible delay when using it with XBMC. I've played around with the delay settings but it doesnt make a difference. When browsing in XBMC there's about a half a sec delay when moving between movies.

What is everyone else getting? Should it be faster than that - I've set the delay to 0

My two cents,

I programmed my new 880 last month, I only used the remote software, no alteration to anything in XBMC

going from memory, but, I started my setup for "XBMC" by adding the TV, receiver and xbox to the list, let it set up the remote on its own

Then, I cleared out the custom buttons and programmed the bottom four to be the four buttons around the arrows on the current xbox remote, by adding them in the Logitech software, using Additional Buttons and Learn Command

The program change buttons control forward and reverse for DVD playback, by selecting this in the standard buttons list in the software.

and what's your delay like - do you get similar response to the original xbox remote or when using the controller?
