Can I Use My Xbox1 As A Mediacenter Like My 360?
« on: January 04, 2008, 10:20:00 AM »

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me just to let me know if what I want to do is possible please.  I have a Windows Home Server in the loft & that feeds 3 PC's using Windows MCE & 2 Xbox360's & 1 PS3.  I would like to use my old xbox just as a media center for my girls room so she can just switch it on & choose a film/album that would be stored on the WHS.

Is this possible? would I have to chip the xbox? should I give up before I start?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Xbox Media Center is a fantastic Media-Center. Chip your Xbox or softmod it. It can do all what you want then.

I think the xbox1 with media center is better than the 360.

An X-Box with XBMC has far better media support then just about any player out there (other then, perhaps, a PC). The only downside is that the older hardware struggles a bit with modern codecs and high bitrates (eg. HD content).

Softmods allow you to at least get XBMC installed and running, and depending on which route you take to install them they cost either little or nothing. You might like to read up on them in the tutorials section.

It's also worth noting that a modded X-Box can have it's HDD replaced with a larger model (for internal game/media storage).

Just softmod it if you are worried about chipping it as an actual modchip. It's very easy and well worth it.

Hi All,

Many Thanks for all your info, I am not worried about chipping it as have done loads in the past, but havent even switched on my old xbox for about 18 months since I got 360 & PS3 (I think I still have an old executer somewhere!) If I dont have a chip I think I will buy another one (Any recommendations??) I just want it to be easy to use as my girls are only 6 & 9 years old.  I have been very out of touch with the old faithful xbox1 modding as done one for about 2 years & we all know how fast this scene moves!

Again, many thanks for the replies & will look for that chip tomoz, hope I have it!

Cheers

Is the 360 and PS3 even in the same league as a XBMC machine when it comes to media?? LOL!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

You can tailor all the menues to make it easy for you daughters... ie the Video menu could just have a "dvd drive" and "movies" entry so they wouldnt be able to get it wrong... same for music and pictures...

Personally I'd give the girls the ether the PS3 or 360 and have the XBMC in the lounge!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) It plays just about everything you can throw at it... very very well.

Silent 80mm fan mod - thats the 360 Boeing 747 cooling out of the running..

Just about any size HDD you like - there goes the ps3

If you've not seen XBMC in over 18 months I think your in for a shock.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
