I myself am a nube when it comes to XBMC and the task looked daunting to say the least so I opted for the NAS approach. I actually got a WD MyBook World Edition 500gb on sale for just over $150 after tax. Quick and easy it was up and running.

Use a .67 bios for a big hdd like that. I have a 500gb and I use a .67 indbios. Not sure about the advantages of X3.. Its skinable and it works with the 1.6 boxes. I love my indbios and have it nicely config'd, but the X3 does look good. If I was just starting out again I would probably go with the X3.

Here's a helpful link..

The first box I modded I did completely with software using the xbox and a pc...no modchip at all. I created a boot disc using xboxhdm or something along that lines. Put the drive I wanted in my xbox  in my pc...ran the boot disc. It created the drive coded to my xbox...blah blah blah. I'm sure there are tutorials. I followed everything to the t and reread everything twice. It took me about two-three hours from unmodded xbox to modded with 250gig drive. The other boxes I've added drives to i've used an xecuter 3 with solderless adapter to setup the drives. That way I don't have to take apart my pc.

Bellow is taken from someone else so credit is not due to me but him!

by the way hi to everyone as my 1st post ;-)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
take a look here.looks easy enough

Necessary Equipment:

1) xboxhdm 1.9 (Found at xbins’ in the directory: /XBOX/Operating Systems/linux/distributions)

2) Torx 10 And Torx 20 Screwdrivers - To Open XBOX

3) A Spare/Blank PC Hardrive

4) FTP Program (AceFTP, SmartFTP etc.)

5) A blank CD-R/W and A CD Burner

Steps:

1. On your xbox's evox dashboard go to system utils and select backup. While your waiting for that to finish, extract all files in xboxhdm 1.9 to your PC'S hard drive and open up the folder 'linux'. In that folder is a folder called 'eeprom'. Once the backup is complete, on your PC run the desired FTP program and access your xbox. Go to E:\ backup_linux\ and download a file called 'eeprom.bin' to the xboxhdm\linux\eeprom folder of on your PC’s hard drive. Then go to the root of your xbox and download the full folders of C:\ and E:\ to your PC's hard drive to the xboxhdm\linux folder and overwrite the ones already there.

2. Now in the root of xboxhdm is a file named 'make-iso-win'. You must run make-iso-win and wait for it to finish once it has finished. Now burn the .iso which was created to a blank cd-r/w using nero or alcohol, dvddecrypter etc. When burning is finished shutdown pc.

3. Take out all other hard drives and put in the hard drive you wish to make an xbox hard drive and set it to be the primary master. Boot up your PC and as it is loading press whatever button to enter your BIOS setup and set your PC to boot from CD. Now reset your PC and put the cd-r/w with the .iso you created on it, in the cd/dvd drive. You should be given a list of options.

4. Choose Option 1 (by typing ‘1’) and press enter to boot VGA console with xbox-drive utilities (default). Type ‘xboxhd’ when it asks you for a login. Another list of options will show up, choose option 1 again (the one that says ‘Build a new Xbox HD from scratch’) and it will begin to format and write the partition table etc. If you put your C:\ and E:\ onto the CD then when it asks you about them type yes and when it asks you if you would like an F select yes, it is all pretty self explanatory. Now quit and reboot your PC. If this worked you now have a brand new nearly-usable xbox hard drive.

5. Now for locking the hard drive. When it boot from the cd again, this time type ‘3’ and hit enter to boot linux with locking/unlocking utilities. Next, type in ‘lockhd -a’. It will now search for the eeprom on the CD and will automatically lock the hard drive. Now turn off the PC and take out the hard drive when it has finished locking.

Now put it back in your Xbox and load up and have fun!

If you can't figure out how to burn the cd properly in Nero or whatever, don't worry, i NEVER do it properly lol, so just use the burn feature in DVD Decrypter and it'll burn the linux.iso in the proper bootable format for you to use it. Also, if your HD is OVER 137 gigs, you'll need to format the remaining space with UnleashX for it to be available once you're finished the upgrade.

Edit - To save some people from buying a harddrive that isn't lockable and therefore wasting their money, please visit this link for a list of lockable and therefore Xbox compatible harddrives - h**p://www.XS Filter -/html/modules.php?name=Xbox_HardDrives

Sorry but I can't remember how I added a larger hard drive, but I know reading about how to do it was more difficult than actually doing it. I think there was like 4 or 5 steps (maybe a few more) but it was easy and painless and it works great. 500gigs filled up pretty fast though I just wish I could have 2 hard drives in there hooked up at the same time.

Looking at your evox.ini, this line is crutial....

Current = 0x09b2e6b0b1753f5475324600850589b7

...it identifies which bios you are currently using.

Unfortunately, I can't find any trace of this number on the 'net so there's no way of knowing if your current bios is capable of handling a large hard disk.  Therefore, I would consider updating your bios to one which defintiely allows large hard disk.  There are instructions in the tutorial section.

Hey man, Actually upgrading your hdd is one of the easiest things you can do. I did it when I was just a wi noob way back in 03. Took all of about 10mins. 5 mins if you leave out the time it took to take apart my xbox. All I did was flash my chip with a bios (I used a .67 indbios) that could handle the big hdd and used good ol Slayers to format the hdd. Dont let all these so called horror stories discourage you. Sometimes people make things out to be harder than they actually are. Grab yourself a copy of Slayers and have at it.  wink.gif

Yes.. everything you want to keep you should ftp to your pc and then back to your new hdd after the format. If you havent already, you should consider making xbmc your dash instead of evox. Xbmc does everything evox does and so much more. Its also a lot easier to use imo.. Everything can be configured directly from xbmc.. no need to edit an ini or anything. Remember the xbmc build that is on slayers is pretty old.. just grab the latest T3ch after youre done with all your formatting etc.. Good luck and have fun!
