Sometimes Xbmc Works, Sometimes It Doesn't
« on: December 09, 2007, 05:18:00 AM »

Hi,

I've just made a fresh install with slayer autoinstaller 2.7 because i had some problems with booting.
I would have to switch the xbox on 4 or five times to get it to boot up correctly.....
and when i got it up running i would be very lucky if i could get xbmc to run....
when i write not working i mean that the the box makes the ussual sound ect, but the screen was all black after showing the evox splash screen...

Well anyway...now the new "slayer" setup boots every time, but xbmc still seems to have a life of its own....
when i try to open it, the screen most often just gets black....

here is what the log file says when it is NOT working....:

10:26:47 M: 52301824  NOTICE: -----------------------------------------------------------------------
10:26:47 M: 52281344  NOTICE: Starting XBoxMediaCenter.  Built on Oct 27 2006

10:26:48 M: 52105216  NOTICE: Per AV pack settings are off
10:26:48 M: 52207616  NOTICE: q:\userdata\sources.xml

Anybody have a clue to what i could try?

I've allready tried to delete guisettings.xml in order to try to make the system make a new one....but no
luck...

cheers

I too had a similar case of the xbox doing that. Eventually the xbox samsung DVD-rom crapped out.
I turffed it (sammys suck) and replaced it with a Phillips DVD-rom and Laser modded it. It's been trouble free
ever since.

Try and disconnect it from the system and see how it behaves. I'm not saying it's the only fix, but it narrowed
it down for me.

Also how old is the HDD?
Have you tried to use a newer one?
It could be the button that turns it on is dirty even.
Maby a PSU is dicky.
Does it play up if you turn it on with the Eject button?

Give it ago narrow it down and bet back to us with the solution or problem still.

Good luck trouble shooting...

If you hold down X+Y when XBMC loads, you'll get a proper debug log with more info in it. Sounds a bit like the HDD is on the way out. Might be worth backing everything up if you've got the gear to do so.

Thanks for the very quick replies!

I bought the xbox used but i got the receipt with and the reciept is dated 28/10 2004....so i guess that the hd is from about that time.....

the receipt also tells me that the box is chipped with the Aladdin XT Xbox chip w. Evox M8 16 (Xbox ver. 1.6)

I have not tried to use a newer hd....I need to get hold of some tools i don't have any Torx bits for my screwdriver...

When boot up using "bypass the chip mode" i get an error #5" screen saying that i need to contact MS.

Heres my "new" log:

Off the top of my head here in australia, in the first 6mths of 2004 the xbox's were v1.4
The other half of that year MS turned out v1.5 and shortly after that came the 1.6a and b's.

anyhoo...

I believe your on a winner if you replace the HDD. Get ya tools, and get back to us if all went well.

Error #5 is the HDD error but you would get that when you bypass the chip, so alls well.

good luck and I hope its up and running in no time!

btw, does it matter what kind of hdd i get?

I just want i to be cheap....

160 GB Hitachi 7200rpm SATA2 8MB
Hitachi DeskStar 7K160
160 GB / 7200 rpm / 8 MB / Serial ATA-300 / 8.5 ms

this one is pretty cheap here anyway...Denmark....expensive as hell when i comes to electronics.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Yes it does matter as to which HDD's you use. I see you listed SATA hdd's.

The xbox uses the older generation IDE hdd's. I found there to be no huge performance increase
with hdd that have more than 2Mb of cache. But finding one with 2Mb will be even harder ,so any IDE hdd
will be fine.

Yes you could use an adaptor but simple is best...

So you've updated XBMC?

What did you do with the UserData folder? Try backing up all the files in that folder, then deleting them. See if that makes a difference.
