Samba No Longer Working
« on: April 26, 2006, 07:15:00 PM »

Ok for starters I'm not clueless here and have had samba up and running and working fine for years
my last build that I compiled myself was 4th of april 2006 and in that samba shares are working fine.   I have recently compiled a new build today and all of a sudden I keep getting the error "Could Not connect to network server"
I thought fine might be a cvs error so I downloaded and installed the latest t3ch release and I have the same problem, going back to my old 4th april build and everything is fine again  blink.gif (so I know its not how its set up on my computer)
also when I use the filemanager to browse the samba shares in the new build it finds the network computers fine and then lets me enter a computer but when I try to enter a share it pops up "invalid computer name".

Has somthing in the samba cvs changed that I'm missing  uhh.gif

Any and all help possible is appreciated thankyou

i doubt this is your problem but in the settings theres an option to set a username and password, which i doubt you did, but this could be the problem.

If i think of anything else I'll let you know.

I know elupus was committing some changes around April 23 to fix a bug with older SMB servers. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but the last few builds have seen quite a few SMB changes.

Yeah I must admit I havn't got that set but if the URL for the share has the username and pass in it XBMC shouldn't need one right ? besides that option has been in for ages

I'm using winxp pro sp2 fully updated so I'd say its not an OLD samba server

Using devcvs source for compile (2006-04-26) and here it works just fine.

Using smb://user:pass@ip/share

So I guess its somthing on my side then thats a problem with today build and somthing between the 4th or april I've allready tried redoing all my network puting in Ip instead of computer name Guess I better start playing with user privlages and security on my shares to see if somthings wrong

Ok I give up
I'm going to wait until version 2 before updateing and see if it works again then
Ive tried everything from renaming my computer deleting all shares and setting them up again disableing all firewalls and antivirus stuff. The real kick in the guts is 1) the old version works fine with any new shares I set up and the computer sitting next to me works fine with the new version  blink.gif pity it dosn't have all my stuff on it

Ever since the 17/4 build I havent being able to connect to my dreambox sat receiver through samba. It was working fine before that. I went to the xbmc irc room but nobody was around to help. I can connect fine to my dreambox from my laptop and every build before the 17/4 worked fine. So the problem is on the xbmc side. Looks like  i'll be sticking with earlier xbmc builds.

Doesn't help the problem I know but you could always use an XBMSP server until then instead.

Even if this was the case I have no idea if it would cause a problem, but are you using an up-to-date copy of the xml or your version from the 4th? Samba Client timeout has been added to the xml since then, maybe if you didn't have that tag in at all it would cause problems or set the timeout to 0 or something (I doubt it though, would expect it to set to the default value).

All good suggestions and yep I've tried using a brand new xml file even the default one will let be browse through the filemanager to my computer like this smb/workgroup/computername/ but as soon as I try to go into any share that it lists (yes it lists them and finds them) like movies/ or music/  It pops up with a message saying "Invalid computer name" even though its allready let me browse to it but not into it.

Its really fustrating when the old build works 100% so somthing must of changed

I start xbmc, go to file manager and then to workgroups, this seems to freeze for about 10 seconds unlike earlier builds and then shows the 2 samba shares, DREAM for my dreambox and MSHOME for my laptop, when i select DREAM, a folder called DREAMBOX appears, and then inside that are the two dreambox shares - CONFIGURATION and HARDDISK, when i select HARDDISK nothing happens.

This is from the xbmc log for this part:
13:43:54 M: 38125568   ERROR: DIRECTORY::CDirectory::GetDirectory - Unhandled exception getting smb://DREAMBOX/Harddisk/

the rest of the log just deals with kai and all the other normal startup stuff.

Im using the tech build from the 17th of april, and the previos build I had on my xbox( cant remember atm what date it was, worked fine). I can connect to the dreambox samba shares fine from my laptop.

The dreambox is a linux based sat receiver ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DreamBox) , so maybe this is a linux related problem?

How about adding a <path> statement to the .xml specifying an IP address instead of browsing using the name?

CODE

smb://dream.box.ip.address/Harddisk/

Just a thought...
