No-ip Ip Address
« on: January 21, 2006, 12:28:00 AM »

I currently have a dynamic DNS setup with no-ip, so that my IP address stays that same. I configured my windows hard drives to privately share their data over the network by choosing "share this folder" without having "Windows File and Printer Sharing" turned on. This is what's called the the "Default Share" named "C$" (or whatever other drive letter you have). So, the shares don't show up in "My Network Places" or anywhere else. To access the shares, one must manually enter the IP of my comptuer followed by "C$" (or whatever other drive letter you have). After that, the username and password are entered.

Here is the XBMC xml file code for one of my shares:

<bookmark>
           <name>DELL XPS G Drive</name>

           <path>smb://anime;administrator:*<password>*@no-ip/G$/</path>
       </bookmark>

When I enter in the actual IP address in numbers where the "no-ip" is, it works just fine. I know that my "no-ip" IP adddress works beacause I use it for PC-to-PC FTP transfers.

Is there a reason why XBMC doesn't recognize "no-ip" ?
It's annoying to have to edit the XML file everytime my IP address changes.

Why don´t you use this syntax?

smb://user:pass@pcname/share

The domain; part is only needed if you have a network with diffrent netmasks iirc, and your pcname do not change....

No-IP is a good service for doing things like running your own website (http://clint.bounceme.net:83) or ftp server, but I think it is out of place here.  The reason is that typically on pc to xbox transfers speed is a priority.  There is really no reason to have to bounce your request off of a no-ip service and back to your computer, then use your internet connection rather than your network to transfer files when these devices are close together.  Set up the devices on the same intranet in your house.  So, instead of typing 216.12.245.56 (I made that up), you can set it up to use intranet (192.168.1.100).  Set this up statically, and it shouldn't change.

The   smb://user:pass@pcname/share  syntax works perfectly!
