Out of interest, how do you make a router out of something with only one network port?

USB maybe? If you're using a USB 'modem', though, your linux box is already a firewall/router. Have a google for 'netfilter'.

If you need a router (in the conventional sense of the word) now, why not add a second network card to your linux box? Network cards can be had for less than $10.

I'm rocking the samba action (that is how SMB is pronounced, right?)

Anyways, the PC in my room is connected to the network with a wifi G card. I have the connection bridged with the wired network adapter, and thats connected to my xbox with a crossover cable. MS wants $100 for their wifi adapter? HA!

When streaming from my PC, I get the 100mbps speeds; when streaming from the other computers in the house, I get the 54mbps wifi speeds.

I find browsing large directories with many files and folders can be a more time consuming process than i'd like. But I stream mp3 and any video type just fine.

i use SMB shares and they work fine besides the long load times for large folders as mike said :)

1 XBOX wired at 100Mb, 1 wireless at 22Mb.

SMB to access from media from SONY NAS store (apprently optimesed to serve media) and PCs, ccxstream to access hacked linksys NSLU2 NAS device.

tried both ccxstream and SMB from the NSLU2 and ccxstream was quicker.

SMB isn't particularly efficient wheras ccxstream is specifically targetted at streaming. However, that having been said it of course depends on the software implementations at the two ends!!

Like Qu-Bit i have a nslu aka a slug and of course i have modded it, overclocked its cpu. I use it as a 1TB nas that streams smb to my xbox via a wrt54g.

As far as streaming stuff off an xbox, i would rather see work done on a way to stream inbetween xbox's, of one's hd to playing on another.

When I first modded in the days XBMP was fading into the sunset and MC was maturing into something really good, I started off with ccxstream. I used it for about 5 or 6 months before it started malfunctioning for no apparent reason. I reinstalled it to no avail. I never did figure out the problem, but I didn't really care too much and decided to try SMB to get rid of the middle man. Never had a single problem since(that wasn't user error, of course  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/jester.gif) ), and it's been a year plus now.

SMB works flawlessly once I figured my firewall as blocking my xbox and I could not connect.

I have never been able to get streaming to my xbox to work.  With either SMB or ccXstream.  Or the iTunes shares!  Shared folders do however work between computers.  I need to get it working soon!
