I only picked some of the big ones but please post your network setup and any tweaks you made to the stream software or cache settings in xbmc along with your success or failures. So other poeple can learn what will work for them.

Half of my files are on a winxp pro machine running ccxgui streaming through a T/100Base swtich.
Other half is on a snap server streaming using SMB through same T/100Base switch.

I have had a 100% success rate with both on any type of file and size with no cache changes.

Frankly, I think this poll is a couple of years late to the party.

Since  XBMP became XBMC, the devs have sanctified SMB as the only way to go.  I can't see why you'd want middleware apps running on your server anyways.

I recently purchased a ReadyNAS RAID5 box for streaming to my xboxen and PCs, and without SMB it would not work. What's more I can retire my old XP box that was doing media server duties, and use it for my kids comp.

SMB (and CIFS) is prettymuch a universal protocol. And I'm thankfull xbmc uses it so well.

Looking around the forums looks like people still like to use middleware apps and have problems or there smb doesnt work and ccx does. When xbmc was still in its minor stage ccx worked better for me then smb did. on loading folders with a lot of content. Some other poeple may find these things depending on there network. This is just hear to try to help people that just cant get theres to work. And show them some options

Relax wireless or wired works either way love the virtua directorys and being able to read isos and zipped files.  But dont get me wrong like the smb also.

SMB/CIFS with 802.11g. I get about 1800kb/s via ftp with 802.11g, so im guessing its in that range for SMB stuff also.

I find browsing large directories with many files and folders can be a more time consuming process than i'd like. But I stream mp3 and any video type just fine.

A Visio picture of the network I have at my home can be found here:

I'm curious if anyone tries to stream xbox content to thier PC from the XBMC/Web folder, which is the default folder for xbmc's web server.

By turning on xbmc's web server you can navigate the web folder via your browser by typing in your xbox ip and the folder you created in the web folder, example: yourxboxip/musicfolder. I've created folders within the web folder and transfered mp3's which seem to stream fine via windows media player. Windows media player also streams .wmv files, though theres no ability to seek ahead, your simply watching the content as it dl's to your temp internet folder. Other formats work well with vlc player, though you have to copy the link into vlc inorder for it to stream.

I was just wondering if this method is good, bad, pointless or what?

You know that sounds interesting...Ive never used the web server much other than to control xbmc a couple times for fun. And using it to serve content might be a little pointless, but its fun to play around...and thats why nerds like us modded our xbox in the first place.

But I wonder whether the webserver itself can be made to use smb shares as links/folders...now THAT would be interesting. Although it sounds highly unlikely that it supports this...i mean its one thing to browse for media...it might be another to load dynamic webpages via the same smb connection...just a thought though. I'll have to look into the documentation for it, when I find time.

It is a fairly strong little webserver.

I sometimes see people ask for ways to stream content from xbox to PC. I guess the advantage would be for people that have multiple PC's networked with their Xbox. This way you could stream content from your xbox to a PC thats in another room. Unless there are other reasons for wanting to stream o PC.

I used to use one of the add ons but now that I have my NAS set up on 4 Linksys NSLU2 servers I have switched to SBM.

Ever heard of Linux in combination with Samba? Work pretty good for Xbox -> PC stream. :P

To get on-topic, I use SMB with the default cache settings and I never had any flaws with it. Good point about SMB is that every Windows-computer supports it. Linux can support it with Samba, also. I think most people who do not use SMB but some other third-party tool simply don't know how to set it up. SMB can be a bitch in Windows 2000/XP (combine it with XP's firewall, permissions on NTFS-partitions, permissions on shares, etc.), especially for people with 'less' knowledge about networking with Windows. It was a lot easier (but less secure!) in Windows 95/98/98SE.

Off course, the true 1337-people use Windows 3.11 (in combination with a NTFS for DOS-wrapper) to stream their movies to their beloved Xbox.

I use my XBMC(s) with SMB running of a Gentoo Linux Dedicated Box but with three different configs.

1) Directly through a 10/100 switch which streams everything I have with no problems.

2) Through the above hub to a Wireless Access Point w/ Directional Antenna which streams content about 1km (.7 of a mile or so for you Americans) to a friends house, giving about 11mbit which is fine even for HDTV content

3) Through the above hub again into a Powerline Adapter (that passes TCP/IP traffic through home power cabling). Now this only gives me about 6-7 megabit which is not enough for some content with higher bitrates. Most stuff is okay if I bump the cache up and let it load for a while, but some video encoded with high bitrates are jumpy - anyone got any ideas how to improve this.

I use ccxstream under Ubuntu, works very fine for years now and I wrote a php script to manage the folders and service.
I dont want to use smb, because its a slow & unsecure Protocoll, my machine is connected diretly to the internet, until someone donates me a second xbox, so that i can make a router out of it.
