Dhcp + Ftp Problem
« on: November 22, 2006, 03:05:00 PM »

Okay, I'm using a switch not a router.

The PC and xbox both acquire an IP via DHCP from my ISP.  This makes transferring files to the xbox slow because it uses the external internet connection.

What I want to do is keep my DHCP IP connections, but somehow also make the PC -> Xbox communicate via local network so that transferring files is faster.

Is there a way to do this?

hey there ^^

well, this all depends on how many computers you have on your LAN..

in my house, i have 3 PCs and 1 xbox on my router, all use static IPs

router = 192.168.1.1
me = 192.168.1.2
xbox = 192.168.1.3
sis = 192.168.1.4
bro = 192.168.1.5

my xbox, sister's and bro's pc all use "192.168.1.1" as their DNS(i figure my router gives them a proper DNS), but i use DNS servers obtained directly from my ISP before setting up my router..

i can just turn on my xbox wait 10seconds(for networking components to load), then use FlashFXP on my PC, using the address ftp://xbox:[email protected]:21, then i'll have access to a certain amount of partitions, depending on whether your xbox is on a dashboard, or XBMC.

i haven't used a switch myself(i decided to get a router, even though people said they were more complicated..), so i don't know if this info will help you.. or even if you already found help elsewhere, seeing as this thread is a few weeks old.... anyway.. good luck!
