Vista Media Center Not Finding Media Extender On Xbox
« on: September 28, 2006, 10:57:00 AM »

I'm having trouble adding / installing Media Extender on my (old model) xbox. I have inserted the Media Extender CD in my xbox drive and have the setup screen on my TV showing the 8-digit number that I'm supposed to enter in the "Add Extender" screen on my Vista PC.

After entering the number, Vista goes successfully through the first step (configuring PC) but get's stuck on the 2nd step (finding Extender) and eventually comes back with the message "Extender not found" ...

I've gone through just about every setting that could be blocking communication between my xbox and my PC (i.e .firewall, UPnP, etc.) and have even connected both to a network hub so that boradcast packets would be seen by both devices. I have also captured network traffic on the Vista PC (using Netmon 3.0) and I can see UDP packets on port 3776 coming from the xbox Media Extender every second or so ... Vista just doesn't seem to do anything with them ...  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif)

Anybody else have this problem?

My XBOX:
Soft-Modded running Executer2
Normally running XBMC (pretty recent Sep/2006 build)

My PC
Running Vista build 5728
Dell Dimension 8300/P4-2.8GHz/1.5GB RAM

I'm having the exact same problem.  Nothing obviously wrong.  Running full RTM with brand new 360.  The xbox said there was an update available on xbox live, so I installed that (beginning to wish I hadn't, so I could rule it out!), but nothing complicated about my setup.

Don't forget to post back here if you find the solution buddy, and I'll do the same.

As revealed in the Beta 2 release notes for Windows Vista no current Media Center Extender other than the Xbox 360 will be compatible with Vista Media Center

maybe thats the issue if you guys didnt solve that yet.

I am having the same problem.  My Windows Ultimate machine can't find the Xbox 360 Extender.  Walked through a quick fix with Xbox 360 support, no I can't remember what it was other than it involved the services.msc program.  My Vista Ultimate machine auto updated and the problem reappeared and remains unresolved.

I am successfully running media sharing with 2 other XP machines and the same firewall software (Windows Live OneCare).
