I've been a member here for quite some time now and I'd like to think that in general I give back to the scene by helping out people here where-ever I can use my knowledge to their advantage.
About as long as I've been a member here I've also been a member of various Subaru forums, as I got my Xbox around the same time I got my WRX. Some of those forums seem to be about the same size this one (probably a bit smaller). Despite that crowd being much older in general (due to everyone at least being old enough to drive, and most much older to afford) it's still plagued by post count whores and people who refuse to search and read.
Recently one of the Subaru forums instituted a new system called "Scooby Snacks" (Scooby being the nickname for Subarus) In this system people get points based on contributions. Each member gets 2 scooby snacks a day that they can give to other members if they happen to see a post that really helped them out or they thought was beneficial to the scene in general. Moderators can give these out whenever they see this as well. Similarly if a member writes a review or a tutorial they receive a scooby snack for every unique member that looks at that review or tutorial (their tutorials are in the forums so it's easier to track). Finally you can also receive scooby snacks by making donations to the site to help keep it up and running.
This scooby snack system replaced the post count system. You could still see someones post count looking at their profile but not under their name in every post; instead you saw scooby snacks.
I'm sure this was a tricky system to implement, and I was there when the change occurred and a lot of people complained. About a month after it's implementation there were no more complaints and the forums had made a drastic 180, flaming and post count whores nearly disappeared as now they were doing everything they could to help people for scooby snacks.
I think a similar system here could be beneficial (I really started to think about this after reading some of the editorials).
I've always personally been a fan of positive reinforcement. You reward the good rather than punishing the bad.
Just something to consider, I'd appreciate your thoughts if nothing else.
