Config Magic Question
« on: August 07, 2005, 04:43:00 PM »

So I have a chipped Xbox, and my friend is looking to upgrade his HD. I know how to run ConfigMagic as I have done it before, but I'm confused about the actual process. My understanding is that the eeprom is stored somewhere on my motherboard, but also on a part of my HDD. If I were to assign my friends eeprom to his new HDD but using my xbox, wouldn't that also alter my the eeprom on my motherboard?

Config Magic Question

I´ll try and explain what the eeprom have todo with the HDD.

When you have a stock xbox, the hdd is locked. The key for the lock is calculated by the   numbers in the eeprom (each xbox have diffrent) so when you turn the xbox on it gets unlocked (as it have the right key) and the files can be read from it.

This is one of the things that make softmodding an xbox tricky if you want to add a bigger hdd. If you have all the files on the bigger hdd and lock it on a chipped xbox  the hdd is locked using the eeprom from that xbox and wont be readable in the one you want to softmod.

This is one thing you dont have worry about when having a chip!

Just pop in the new big hdd, start the xbox with slayers install disc in the dvd tray, format and partion it. (The key check when starting the xbox is removed by the modchip´s bios)

Then just install the apps you want and start config magic 1.6 final! (use this version) and you will be able to lock the hdd.

here is realy no reason for you todo this (lock it) unless you want to play on live with it (start the xbox with the modchip off) so just pop it in and enjoy it!
