Xbox App To Read Regular Usb Memory?

I know that the regular way to use a non-xbox memory with the xbox is to let m$dash format it fatx first.  That's all good for seting up the game-save hacks, but once the xbox is modded there should be an app (like boxplorer) that could read files off of a regularly formatted usb memory device.  Such an app would be useful for dumping photos from a digital camera (or mp3s from an mp3 player) directly to the xbox harddrive via a modified usb-to-controller_port cable without the need for a PC.
Does anyone know if such an app (xbe) exists?  I am speculating that a linux image installed on the xbox can do that, but I am hoping that there is a simpler way.
