Xbox Live Updates

I remember reading something about taking live updates off a live-ready box and putting them on a box that has no account.  Was there a program or app I need or was it as simple as copying the appropriate UDATA/TDATA entries?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I really want to get my friends the Halo2 updates they deserve.
