but, on the other count, i do disagree with you L ... the board IS selling our 'group characteristics' information to whomever is paying them to put their questionare link up top as an advertisement ... click on that 'strong armed lady' ad i've been talking about.  and that's zero degree of separation in my book.

the central idea at work here is that the media, in general, are building data bases of our (the peoples') collective and individual behaviors.  (djall ever read Vonegut at least?)  did you know you have both a social security number and a 'media identification tag?'  it sounds like you might be suprised here to learn exactly how closely our media and government are connected.

now i'm not paranoid like a jehova witness or anything, but just let me tell you where i'm comming from ...

recently i heard about something that bothered me ... that George W's former campaign manager, Fred Malek, had allocated a fairly large sum of fundage to studying the surfing habbits of registered swing voters...calibrating where they should campaign 'next' based on psychological profiling ... now if that ain't fuckin low down!

so recently i've become a little more curious as to where my surfing info is being compiled and sent ... i got a big pet peeve against our politicians turning the world against us (US) while stealing/wasting huge summs of money at the same time ... one catastrophe at a time ... please!?

You can track peoples location by just looking at the IP address.  its very simple and advertising by region can be displayed that way.  There is no information sold by the site.  Sorry if you looking for a conspiracy theory but take my word for it.

All advertisers have been building databases for years, this is nothing new.

Here's a tip... if you're concerned about your information and security

1) Don't give any out on your computer

and most importantly

2) Don't click the fucking link.

If you're concerned about your privacy, what the hell are you doing clicking on random, non-descript banner ads?  Just because X-S sells some banner space to a data miner, doesn't mean they are selling are info.  Hell, X-S doesn't have any of my info that I feel needs to be protected.  Why would I give that info out freely?  Google ads are a good example, just because you see a google ad pop up that says 'fill out our survey' that turns out to be a marketing company looking for consumer profiling, doesn't make google 'The Man' and part of the global conspiracy to implant UPC codes into the back of our collective necks.
You don't need to PM every mod on Xbox-Scene because you've finally noticed that banner ads are hooks for advertising (duh!) and most interenet advertisers do some sort of data mining to make sure they are spending their marketing dollars wisely.  

'Dude! Look! It's the internet, and the advertisers are trying to make money and find out about consumers!  OMFG! PM oswald quick!'

Don't spam users on the board, that makes this worser! I didn't even reply to this thread and he spams me. Dude to block adverts use firefox right click block images from http://... it's not hard or get an ad remover like webwasher/outpost firewall.
