I modded my xbox a few months ago and have been out of the scene.  I was wondering if there was any development in making an xbox program that will connect to a computer HD and stream the game data over the network to the xbox.

I am going to be buying a 200gig HD soon I think and it would be great if I could just use it in my computer so I can do other stuff with it besides just hold the xbox games.  

It is possible to stream games to the gamecube at 10mb/sec so I thought xbox would be fairly easy to do at 100mb/sec.

Just wondering if anyone knows of a way to do this or if I am SOL and should just install the HD in my xbox.  Thanks for any replies.

I realize it can sit inside my xbox and hold some MP3 or DVD or something to.  The thing is all my DVD are actually on CD.  It would be nice if I could install it in my computer as a 4th harddrive and use most of the space for xbox games but use other space for downloading files, computer apps, stuff like that.

This could be really nice on a college campus with a huge network.  Let friends stream games from you so they can try them out that way instead of renting etc...

What about for people who dont have the money to put down on a modded harddrive.  How many times has someone burned a DVD to find out that their backup of the game had an error it didnt work right and ended up wasting a DVD?  If you could stream you could test all the games first before a burn....



I dont know, personally I see a lot of reasons in having this program and it seems that a lot of other people could find use for it.   Anyway I was just checking to see if anything was out there for it but I guess not :/

Not impossible but it isn't "fairly easy". I don't know anything about the gamecube thing but on Xbox it would require hacking the kernel and rewrite its file IO functions, include TCP stack and network adapter drivers and writing a server app on the PC.

The one doing that might as well complete the emulator Cxbx and eliminate the need for an Xbox to play Xbox games ;)

The gamecube streamer works by pretending its connection to a network is your pc.

There is a game (Phantasy star) in it you are able to enter an IP address so you can change that to your computers IP and run a program on your computer to load  a certain game.  It should be a lot easier on xbox.

Wouldnt you just need to write an xbe that will read a networked computers harddrive and then launch another xbe from that location?  

Kind of like its own dashboard for networked computers... you could point the xbox directly to the location.

this has been talk about before.
beleave me all the coders know about the game cube and how its hack works
thing is
noone wants to bother doing this
because
1 the xbox can only run one xbe at a time
2 the xbox cannot run a xbe over a lan line...what would run the ftp?
3 the only way you could even think of doing this was to write the info into your bios and even that wouldnt work

it wont happen.

put the hard drive in your xbox.

this message brought a glimpse of hope when I saw the topic.

Now I see that since I'm not getting a bigger xbox hard drive I'll have to dish out for a DVD+-R/W drive.

Should I go for DVD-R or DVD+R media?

why dvd?
you could spend the same ammount on a nice size hard drive and never worry abut buying discs or having them get scratched, orwaste so much time ripping them  and burning them on a pc.

the xbox can use a hard drive take advantage of that fact.

My box is softmodded.  I want it unopened and in a state where I can restore everything if I want to, to the state it was before I softmodded it.

But if you can find me a link for a 200-300 gig hard drive for around 150 dollars (about the price for a decent DVD-+R/W) then feel free to post it.

Besides a few people have hinted at getting together and getting me an alienware comp for my birthday in a couple weeks so why get a hard drive if I'll have a DVD recordable drive at my disposal?

I had orignally planned to use DVD's but it turns out that my xbox has been eating them.  I always take great care of my CDS but with the xbox I started to notice a few random dirty disk errors and then I saw huge scratches on the disks.  I never made any of them myself or through careless use...it was like the dvd drive in the xbox was eating them alive...very weird.  This is why I picked to buy a drive.  

I got 200gig for $106.  Go to www.newegg.com and look it up if you want kdanarch, might be a good option for you.  Its a westerndigital 7200rpm.  You can also get a good dvd burner for under $100... dual format and at least 8x.


Isnt FTP already implimented in a BIOS?
I thought the new xenium OS 2 allowed you to install a dash and flash other BIOS from a networked computer so no more burning cd-rws that cant be read for 10 tries.  If this has already been done I dont see why it would be impossible.

Tigerdirect.com almost always is selling 200g WD drives for $90 with mail-in rebate.

 And as soon as you load a real bios, that ftp is GONE.  It doesnt run "in the background" or other such nonesense.

As said before - there is no network code in the MS bios.
