but it wouldn't be legal to launch FMC if using an XBE. If you watched that Xbox Linux video I think Andy Green or someone started talking about how a Rom is Legal over an XBE because it contains no m$ code underneith what so ever, ok it would solve launching problems but it wouldn't be strictly legal and this is were Freindtech would be treding water etc, I understand you BJ but I think for FriendTech it's best to stay as ROM (legal bios).

The whole "XBEs are illegal" argument ignores the OpenXDK, which builds XBE-compatible executables WITHOUT any underlying M$ code, though it depends on making calls into the Kernel embedded in the BIOS (Which is not distributed with the XBE at all).

We here at Xbox-Scene make the distinction with OpenXDK-developed XBEs over XDK-built XBEs - one is "legal" while the other is not.

but you need to have an illegal  bios to run the legal xbe's.  so its still legality issues.

Which is precisely why I mentioned TWO releases - one with an XBE/Linux self contained launcher, and another strictly Linux-based package.

I don't see the source code available anywhere on the xbox-linux page on sourceforge. Is this going to be made available?

If it uses opensource you gotta release all your added source.

(unless you wrote it all yourself)

Anyone remember the whopti-do about smatxx os gpl issue?

(And knowing what shallax has done for the scene i wouldn´t worry about it not being released... Just give him/them some time)

And that being relevent in what way?

You talk about it being legal all the way with mce and then you go against the most fundamental part of opensource?

Releasing the source unless it is completly written from scratch by yourself. And with patches from xbox-linux it is not... One line of code is all that is needed...

So, once again: I have no doubte that shallax and company will release the code, but you need to get that foot out of your mouth and stop saying two things at one time. You might confuse people.. Legal or not legal..... That was the question....

Not bashing at all, actually quite the opposite. I'd love to see how this was all implemented and I'd like to make it work on the F:\ partition of my HD. It is quite obvious that shallax won't make an illegal version to run on my HD so I'd like to have a try at making my own personal version.

legal or not!?,

im not sure but since it need a modchip and a min of 20G Hard Drive,
it shoult not be legal...

The modchip/TSOP is to load a linux/cromwell based bios which is quite legal.

I was refering to that statement, I will say again, if you want to build your own go and get gentoox original source and use the xbox linux patches and build your own. Essentialy what shallax has done! We could all build our own Gentoox if we wanted to, so whats the point of rereleasing source code when it's already been released since you can just get gentoox source code and build your own dam MCE.

And also about my Xenium-OS thing I was stating, with there 1.1 and 1.0 software, same with smartxx they just based it on the original dam Cromwell. Same with OzXflash and flashx, could someone link me to them sources i'd be grateful.

GPL doesn't mean "source must be downloadable within 3 mouseclicks". GPL only means that u can get the source if you want to (e.g. by contacting the author personally via e-mail). Not putting sources online isn't against GPL, totally ignoring someone's requests for sources is.

As for GentooX, making such a request would be dumb cos all sources are right in /usr/src/linux and in Xbox-Linux CVS.

Back to Friendtech MediaCenter. Some ppl asked why it doesn't use FatX as native fs. Last time I used the FatX driver (mounted E:\ and shared it with Samba) I managed to corrupt the partition table (after a lot of renaming, copying and stuff) and lose all my data (I had a backup offcourse). So I think it's a bit too buggy to use as a fs for Linux.

I haven't had a chance to test FMC yet, but I think it will kick major ass like the rest of Shallax' work.

e'one seems to have their 2 cents to add.  This release is the greatest thing since the LBA48 hack in my opinion however is legal.

I didn't read the nfo and accidently lost all the games of a friends f:/ ..oops :\

However the install was flawless, UI looks great and the recovery mode works a treat.

My biggest problem was i couldn't get past the 6 icons on the screen for Video, music, pics, etc but i'm assuming the Xpad doesn't work like a mouse and i needed to use either the remote, a usb keyboard or a usb mouse.

The idea is there all the same and when i get my 250gb hard drive i plan to use MCE, 2GAM dash and all the other great ILLEGAL code out there.

Hopefully have this up and running in my car using a unique 12v conversion.

Be sure to check out my website in the near future for this project.

Word out there to all the guys at FriendTech and xbox-scene.. love it all...
