I have to admit 500 megs is a bit of a big download for a media player.  I'll stick a torrent up when it's finished, but I'm not sure it'll be worth it :-(

Would it be possible for someone to install this on their box and then copy the installed files to another xbox HD so as not to lose all the files on the F: drive? I'd like to do an install on my stock HD then copy the files over to my 100 GB drive I always use.

Yeah, the "Lose your F:" thing makes this pretty much a blown deal for me. sad.gif

Why can't it be a self-contained Linux XBE launcher that understands FATX??

Come on Xbox-Scene, surprised to see BenJeremy with that kind of comment. This is the first legal media center for the xbox, FriendTech don't want to tred water and start selling illegal stuff, this is why they worked with Gentoox (the best Linux OS on the Xbox, yes I have tried Xebian).

loki for a LEGAL FUCKING reason thats why. Guys, SHALLAX has had enough political shit from MEMBERS at xbox-scene and other areas, just LEAVE the bad comments ok! If you haven't tried it don't start ripping shallax it will not support G drive since not everyone will have a 160GB xbox ok!

doing a loopback file would allow m$ to see it in E and would be SLOW. Scan-C you tried Gentoox Pro?

Edit,

And doing a loopback on F would get corupt over 137GB, but for the SECOND time a LOOPBACK would be slow, What if it gets corupt? A native parition is a much better solution.

im with bucko on this one.  i was dissapointed that its only native because i only have one gaming box and one server box.   anyway loopback the biggest you could get for media is 4 gigs which isnt much.  plus your running the looback interface which slows it down (as bucko said).  since shallax made it for friendtech to install in there dreamx bravo's he had no use for it to be loopback.  friendtech is going to make it so their bravos are a media center/gaming (LEGAL games).  you guys just love to bash ShALLaX now dont you.  if your so pissed about it get the cromwell source code from shallax and recode it so that mce will launch off of a loopback device.  otherwise keep your flames to yourself.

Hey, I'm not trying to get down on it.... just wondering why a "legal" XBE loader can't be built to launch this thing (we do have, after all, a legal OpenXDK to build valid executables), same as some of the Linux distributables, and use a FATX-compatible file system.

Why would it need to be on E:? M$ can always look at the drive to see if it's a "legit" 8 or 10GB drive, so a custom F: partition is somewhat a pointless in regards to "stealth".

I just don't see any reason why a self-contained XBE-based Linux launcher, running the media center (compatible woth FATX), can't be made. It doesn't have to LAUNCH other XBEs (though that shouldn't be too hard to do, either, technically and legally in a non-Cromwell BIOS)

Oh, and I also must plead ignorance on the much Linux stuff.... so if I'm missing some fine technical points, please point them oput to me.  I thought Linux distros could currently handle being launched by M$ Hacked BIOSes and read/write FATX partitions.

If it was an XBE, you would have to load it via a hacked m$ bios right (IE through Evox dash, which would be illegal, in the UK anyway), What I meant by E was like if you run an XBE an all wouldn't it catch data in UDATA and TDATA were m$ could see it as a game save? Thats what I meant, I know m$ can scan hd's anyway, but doing things in F at least a stock m$ bios won't see it.

Well, the package could come in two formats, one a pure Linux distro, and an XBE in the other (solves the launching problem).

As for "E" - apps do not need to write anything to UDATA and TDATA. There is no mechanism that forces these directories to be created, or the app to use them. It's just the "Standard Operating Procedure" for apps. Most homebrew apps break these rules, anyway.

but it wouldn't be legal to launch FMC if using an XBE. If you watched that Xbox Linux video I think Andy Green or someone started talking about how a Rom is Legal over an XBE because it contains no m$ code underneith what so ever, ok it would solve launching problems but it wouldn't be strictly legal and this is were Freindtech would be treding water etc, I understand you BJ but I think for FriendTech it's best to stay as ROM (legal bios).
