Eeprom Access Denied - Need Help W/ Soft Modded Xb
« on: April 22, 2005, 07:39:00 AM »

I purchased a soft modded xbox in a forum (just so you know I might not no the tech talk because I didn't do it myself).

I just got an advanced av adapter so I can have some 5.1 surround. I went into "Main Options" via Avalaunch and tried to enabled DTS and AC3 and when I try to enable I get the error message:

"EEprom access denied
Will not write to eeprom when HDD is locked"

I was told to try and launch the MSDASH via explorer but I contacted the seller before I did and he said this:

"Sorry, no MSDASH on my mods.

I format the C: and do a clean install on them. Just the way it is. You are free to explore other dashboards but be very careful in C: if you delete or change files with a softmod, it may potentially render the xbox into a big black doorstop."

What can I do to enable DTS/AC3?

Thanks

P.S. I posted this same message in two other forums (The Avalaunch Category and the Audio/Video Category). I did this because it's a big problem for me and not all people go to all categories.. Hope everyone understands..

Thanks

it could be a virtual eeprom with write disabled...

i'd contact the seller and ask them exactly how to do what you want to do. as of now, we have no idea how your xbox is modded and so it's kinda hard to guess at what could be going on. the seller would obviously have a better idea of how it's set up.

...and no ms dash? he either didn't want you to have msdash for some reason or he's an amateur...

I asked him and he said " you are going into territory that I have not expolred yet." He said he had DD 5.1 running on his xbox before but has since got rid of all his high def equipment so he's not sure how to test.

He's a real qreat guy and I doubt he's an amateaur. I've asked him for some details and I will post back.

Thanks a lot for the help!

don't get me wrong...i'm sure he's a great guy....it's just that most avid softmodders will find setting up a stock virtual C drive fairly trivial.

i'm not sure what else would give you that error....i'd suggest not trying to unlock your HD until all other options are exhausted.

and if you do decide to try unlocking your hd....MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP YOUR EEPROM.BIN FIRST OR YOU WILL BE UP SHIT CREAK WITHOUT A PADDLE!

i'm thinking....with no msdash, what are you trying to use to change the settings? i know that in avalaunch, there is an option somewhere to enable/disable eeprom writing. having eeprom writing off could possibly cause that error...

Got a reply from the seller.

"Your xbox has had a complete douche and the only thing loaded on the c drive is AVALAUNCH dash and the UXE exploit. That is it  It was done using HDMAKER from ldots and the originial expliot was from the 007 Ltools UDE2.

I really have no need for the msdash on mine or anyone elses at this time and you are the first of many who I have run into this particular problem. If you would like I can take your xbox back and format the disk and install the UDE2 exploit and that will give you full access to what you need but in all honesty if one goes changing files in the C: you can render your xbox useless. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! "

Does that help at all?

so basically he hotswapped and used a stripped down version of Ltools....what a pro....

aaanyways, i'm guessing that it has to do with what i posted before (since apperantly you DO have avalaunch as the dash). i don't actually use ava, so i don't know where the setting is...but i've heard that it has an option to enable/disable eeprom writing. unless you have writing enabled, it won't be able to change your settings. i think that's your answer.

before you start messing around though, get evox or configmagic, put it in your apps folder, run it and backup your eeprom. without a copy of your eeprom, it will be very hard to recover from mistakes.

edit: perhaps you could ask him for a setup with nkpatcher 10 and a virtual C drive? the UDE2/pbl-metoo setup isn't bad, it's just outdated...*shrug* i'm not sure if he'd know how to set that up though.

He's running UXE, but we don't know if he's using pbl or nkpatcher.

Tbird, check your E drive, and see if there's a default.xbe in the root of it, and tell us what size it is. If it's less than 20kb and there are no other files there (like .bin files) you're probably running nkpatcher, which would things a little bit easier for you. If you are running nkpatcher, then you can simply download the driveimage utilities (it's in the software section of Xbox-scene, under exploit tools), run the shadowc maker, and install the MS dashboard. You can get the MS dashboard from Slayers.

Ok. I'm seriously new at this so excuse the total ignorance. How do I check the E: drive? In AVA I go into DVD2XBOX and choose (cool.gif DVD/CD-R/HDD browser. When I do that it goes to e:\APPS but doesn't have a <...> for me to go up to the root. Am I in the wrong place or do I have to FTP into it to view the files you want me to check.

Just use the file manager in Avalaunch.

Go to file manager>E>and see if there is a default.xbe there.

I don't see a file manager anywhere in Avalaunch. Here is what the seller said:

"You have no dashboard files on E:

Nkpatcher is on C: and so is the AVA dash"

the seller said he pulled the package from Ltools so it doesn't make a difference which it is. if it came from Ltools then it can't be an nkpatcher that supports virtual eeprom. i'm still curious if you've looked into the eeprom write enable/disable. i'm pretty sure a problem very similar to this came up not long ago in the newbie section and that was the cause of it.

Ok.. Here is the menu selection that the xbox boots to:

Xbox Games (obvious what this is)

Other Games (Emulators)

Applications
-----DVD-X2 DongleFree DVD-Player
-----dvd2xbox
-----XBMC

Settings
-----Network (network related options)
-----Main Options
----------AV Settings (This is where I try to enable DTS/AC3 and get the error message).
----------Hardware Info (summary of stuff)
----------Misc Info (sstuff)
----------DVD (couple DVD options)
----------Harddisk tools (Has an option that says HDD lock (click to toggle) Enabled I click it, the screen blinks, but nothing changes. Then there is Harddisk lock : supported and also the HDD lock password.
----------Boot Options (has Alllow EEPROM writeback : Disabled)
----------Games extras
----------Skins
----------Sounds
----------Languages
----------Quickstart
----------About Avalaunch

Reboot

Shutdown

Hopefully that helps. I do see an "Alllow EEPROM Writeback and it is possible for me to enable it. When I do it gives me the message "EEProm writeback should only be enabled by personell that know how to recover from bad EEPROM. Bad EEPROM can render your xbox useless"

well there you have it....that's your problem.

i don't use ava and therefore have no idea how to enable eeprom writing, but that is your new goal. otherwise, you'll need to get access the the ms dashboard so you can change it with that.
